Title: The water looks like cooled lava

And the shore is hard to find.

I'm thinking you're going to need a DXdiag. That will have to wait until tomorrow.

In the mean time has anyone else experienced this and if so what was the cure?

Enable "Detailed Water", in the Options->Graphic Details->Advanced panel, and that should take care of it.
