That's a big old cat. The Germans used inertia starters for almost everything.

Was hand cranking the only way to start a 109s engine?  On occasion, when a pilot would drop his drop-tanks in in a P-51 or P-38, he would forget to select the proper onboard tanks.  So he would have to select the proper fuel tank, then restart his engine with the electric starter.  How would a 109 pilot do this?

The pilot wouldn't need to use a starter, the prop would continue to rotate.

And also there is no fuel selector switch in a standard 109 with one center line DT. The engine always draws fuel from the single internal fuel tank. The DT fuel is pumped into the internal tank.

Which really means that none of us 109 jocks should be able to take anything but 100% and a DT....

Taking less than 100% when carrying DTs is, shall we say, less than historical regardless of aircraft. However it would be possible in the 109 also. Would just have to run the DT fuel pump in intervals to keep the internal fuel at the desired level.

Not sure from the reading that there IS a separate fuel transfer pump for the drop tank.  Might all just be done with piping and a valve and letting the engine fuel pump do all the work.
Anyone have a 109 pilot or mechanics manual to check??

Looks like the drop tank is pressurized by compressed air from the engine, forcing the fuel into the internal tank.

Good grief, 109 pilots sat directly atop the main fuel tank?

And the fuel line (yellow) ran thru the cockpit. It had a clear section to see the fuel flo.

The Fw190 pilot also sat on top of fuel tanks.

The pilot, fuel and ammo were the major variables with regard to weight. So to keep the CG shift within tolerable limits those had to be located as close to CG as possible. Most WWII fighters had fuel tanks immediately in front or behind the cockpit, and/or in the wings. The result was that the 109 pilot sat on a tank of gas, and with a 20 mm cannon between his legs. Mad Max style.
