Well after several years of debate I finally broke down and built my own rig....Cool experience! I am able to run most everything wide open I am still not able to hold the frame rate I was hoping for (not expecting miracles), but could someone take a look at my dxdiag and see if there is anything I can tweek.........

It looks like you have a USB headset and onboard audio also? You can gain a little more power by getting an actual sound card, preferably a SoundBlaster Z, or better. Unfortunately, that is going to come with a $100 price tag, or worse.
-
if he gets a sound card then he will also have to get a new headset.
doc do you have enviromental mapping on? if yes then turn it off.
semp
-
Sound card question- if I simply replace my headset to utilize the onboard sound, will I get the same effect?
Environmental mapping in AH3 is turned all the way up, no real problems 45-60fps, but was looking to improve AH2 since there is not a firm release date for 3....
Without having to turn any thing down, can I do anything to tweet?
Thanks for the help.....
I know just enough about computers to be stupid....
-
your problem is the em. your graphics card cant handle it.

Environmental mapping is the game painting reflections of the surrounding area onto your ride. This can improve the look of a shiny bare metal aircraft but makes less difference to matt camouflaged rides. With the slider turned down to one notch you will still get the same reflections so your plane will look no different in screenshots. The only drawback compared to having the slider all the way to the right is that when you maneuver the plane it takes longer before the game updates the reflection changes.
The thing is environmental mapping is really demanding on your video card, it takes a lot of processing to work out all the reflection angles. So turning it down to one notch ought to make a big difference to your FPS for a negligible loss to the look of the game.

Would getting another GTX960 and running SLI help any?
-
SLI helps by using the GPU to render alternate frames. Probably, EM is acting in a sluggish manner because your video card has only 2GB of VRAM, and you have the texture size set above something your system can handle smoothly. SLI will help, but it will not be a magic cure-all.
The subject of audio has been discussed so many times that I really do not feel that I want to write it all again (I'm too busy). You can search through the hardware forum here and find many, many topics where it is discussed. Suffice to say that your form of audio is two examples of the worst form of audio. Many people on the forum swear by it, so if you can live with it then that's your decision.
The best way to use audio on a PC is to have playback and record on separate external devices (my conclusion). Every time the issue comes up the argument ensues and we arrive at the same ultimate conclusion, which is then ignored the next time the question comes up and we have to repeat the entire argument.
(Two examples from recent discussions)

It is possible that his headset plugs into a USB fob, which in that case the headset will still work.

If you were to buy a second 960 I'd recommend returning the 960 if possible and getting just a single 970, or even a 980 for a few bucks more.
-
Good point Spikes. A single 980 Ti, or GTX 980 would be my suggestion.
-
There has been some issues with AMD multi core processors only using one core for AH2. For what I've read it still may be an issue for some models. Plus there's no exact information about which models suffer from this feature, as far as I know. AH3 may improve the usage of several cores, at least it will take lots of weight off of the processor.
-
because your video card has only 2GB of VRAM,
Is this right? Thought I bought a 4GB card
I will send the card back....will the 970 get the results I want, or do I need to drop the cash for the 980 or 980Ti? Don't mind buying it but don't want to buy something I may never fully utilize...

You did. Your DXDIAG clearly shows the video card has 4GB of dedicated video RAM.
-
Oops, sorry.
EDIT: I was comparing cards on GPUboss.com and was looking at what they reported.
I would like to know if they doubled the number of texture mapping units, and shading units along with the memory, because otherwise it's not much help to have more memory.
-
Bought a GTX760 OC 2GB last year and was initially disappointed with the performance in AH2.
Then I started looking at what was happening. The factory settings for power management, clock, and the cooling fans were very conservative. Or in other words, set up for quiet operation at the cost of performance. So the video card was throttling back under load.
All I had to do was change the cooling fan profile and it came alive. It was a lot louder but only when playing games.
Your video card probably came with some kind of management software to help you do this.
Hope this might help a little. Good luck.

Well doc i am running the 980ti with 6 gigs of memory , but you should be holding 60 fps with the card you have. question is what fps are you experiencing and under what settings and conditions.
next i would look into what Bizman said. that is a huge processor and with 4.3 ghz and should be able to handle anything this game has to offer.
next i would check out the heat on your video card. i experienced high heat on my video card until i picked up MSI afterburner program for free and had the ability to set the fan speed for different heat ranges .
this is a link to the free program i use to check my heat and fan rpms .
http://openhardwaremonitor.org/
if you could update us with your settings and conditions and what kind of fps you are experiencing this would help . here is an example of what the open hardware program has to show.

mike he's got the enviromental mapping at full. that's why he gets lower fps. his card cant handle it.
I have a 970 but with only 2 gig and it cant handle more than 1 notch of em before I see lower fps.

yes i agree there , but it would be nice to see just what kind of fps he is getting and make sure he is not overheating anything

On runway (with everything on full) 26-30fps at 1000ft 36-40fps above 3,000 feet 60fps
This is for AH2
When you add planes +\- 6 on the ground Fps drops to 22 altitudes remain the same
In a GV not 26-44 (with some random skips from time to time)
I am running PrecisionX 16 - temps hold 67-68C
Other info while running
GPU clock 1430MHz
Memory clock 3506MHz
Memory usage 717MB
-
I have tested those cards (GTX 960) but the 2GB version. I used MSI afterburner (using it now on GTX 980s SLI). I make notes in case I ever go back to the 960s (which I won't because I traded them off). My settings for maximum performance were:
Power Limit 125%
Temp Limit 91C
Core Clock +190
Memory Clock +499
Now I always start with a stable system with good clean power, but you said you have everything sorted out.
EDIT: Optimal overclock results were:
GPU Core 1556.7
GPU Mem 2000.7
GPU Temp 49C
Fan Speed 100%
Not sure why your Memory clocks are so different. AH! GPU-Z reports the memory differently (half).
-
Well Doc what i did was run full settings then took a picture of the settings then made a film using my 980ti card . i dont know if you can return your card and spend the $650 for the 980ti but this will give you what you are looking for. if this is what you want from the game take a look.

Thanks to you all :salute
AH2: I slid down to 1 notch above none on anti-aliasing, took off ground clutter, and moved bump map my plane to 50% and got a very stable 59fps...
I also only had to cut environmental mapping in AH3 down 1 notch (everything else on) and got a very stable 53-59fps, not to mention I got some killer screenshots that I am sending out to my squad!

I saw the same thing on the GTX980 I bought a year ago. With a minor tweak to the fan profile, the card runs very well, if just a bit noisily. It never heats up to much over 65 C. now...

Now that is something I can not promise! :devil
