Title: Windows 10? Yes or no?
Post by: alskahawk on December 14, 2015, 02:56:15 PM
I run windows 7 on my game computer and media computer. And as we all know, when you have windows 7 installed, you get the request to install windows 10 daily. I did it when it first came out. Didn't like it. Lost all my passwords, driver issues. So here is the question a few months later; Is it worthwhile? For gaming (AH only) or for a media computer?

Both computers;
Gigabyte 990 MBs
4.2 mhz cpu (media computer) 3.5 game computer.
16 Ram in both
NV GTX 660s

You can kill the badgering for Windows 10.  Not hard to do: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,71591.msg4998528.html#msg4998528

If you got that update, then you got some other updates which will be interfering with the performance of your computer.

I am not going to use Windows 10.  Windows 7 is good until 2020.

One of my squadmates just reverted to 7 from 10 and now he can't start AH even after reinstalling it.

That usually means he is missing a native driver (video, sound...).

My brother just asked me the same question a couple of days ago.

I recently upgraded my laptop from 8.1 to 10.  10 is better than 8.1 which was better than 8 which came installed on my MSI laptop so those were all steps forward.

I just built my new desktop installing 7 but upgraded it to 10 within a few days, primarily so I wouldn't have to reinstall a lot of drivers and software on my SSD down the road, but also because I've always been 2-3 generations behind in Windows.  I ran 98 until Vista was released and just moved from XP so this was a chance to catch up for once plus I like 10.  I haven't had any real issues with it.

I told my brother if he liked 7 not to bother but also told him the free offer would end in June.  He decided to stay with 7 for now since he likes it.

I like it so far. Downloaded Win10 last week. Seems a bit smoother than version 8.

No. Seems like a lot of hooks for 3rd party stuff (ie Antivirus) are funky right now. Sounds like its still very beta imho.

I "upgraded" to windows 10 from 8. If I had a choice though I'd go back to 7. I hate the interface on 10.

There is no doubt in my mind W8 was intentionally made bad by MS to make it an easy choice to go from w8 to w10.  I don't think MS counted on the strength of W7 and things like free downgrades from w8 to w7 offered by sellers like new egg.

MS historic cycle of bad-good software to increase sells is legendary in business models I would guess.

Based on what I've seen and heard, upgrading from 8.1 to 10 may work. Upgrading from 7 to 10 is more likely to have issues sooner or later.

Thanks. He got it working after a second re-installation.

Just bought a new comp that came with windows 10. It's running excellent. I do have a lap top also which is windows 7 and downloaded windows 10. After the download my lap top was missing tons of drivers but windows said all drivers were up to date. I just went back to windows 7 and my lap top is working back great. I guess windows 8 to 10 will work but 7 to 10 may have issues for some reason. My tower is awesome!!!

Today I met a natively Win8.1 laptop upgraded to 10 by the shop techie. He had managed to transfer all the pictures and other data from the old XP rig, but after only a few days use Explorer wouldn't show any contents of the computer. On the Desktop there were icons for "Computer" and "Owner" and the Start menu had them split down to subfolders like "Pictures" etc. None of them worked, the Desktop and Taskbar only rolled a refresh. I tried to open Control Panel with the same result. Even Win+E resulted the same. The only way I could verify the old data indeed had been transferred was by opening the "Run" command line by Win+R and clicking "Browse"...

Just a heads up, Windows Update has just sent out the Windows 10 nagging app as a recommended update.

Well, they are ahead of schedule.  Microsoft had said they were going to do this in January.

Interesting too, is W10 knowing that I installed a video card.  I have w7 and when w10 started the upgrade program.  This computer did not have a video card so W10 said it was not upgradable to W10.  I installed an older video card a couple of days ago.  W10 new icon now says w10 ready and that was without clicking on the upgrade icon.

I am currently using win10 and AH along with my saitek sticks and trackir. no problemo.

Fine Print: I do not in any way endorse windows as it is, IMHO, the very definition of malware and spyware. I load windows only for AH. Gnu/Linux is my OS of choice.

The answer is Yes. Skuzzy sent a warning about certain updates (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,71591.msg4998528.html#msg4998528) a while ago, they've been discussed several times on this forums.
