Title: What's the best WWII documentary?
Post by: FLOOB on January 01, 2016, 11:41:05 AM
It is the Battlefield series. It is the closest thing there is to a video encyclopaedia of WWII. Simpletons and children may not like it because it doesn't stoop to reenactments or interviews.

That's a great series. I remember when it first aired. I have a number of them on DVD. I may go watch one now!  :aok

"The World At War" is very good as well.

I really enjoyed WWII The Complete History in 13 approximately 1 hour segments.

The story starts at the end of WWI detailing the political climate that led to the outbreak of WWII.  There's a lot of good information on the world leaders, politics, strategy, technology and of course, awesome war footage of every type from every part of the world including several tidbits of information I never knew about.

Here's a link to episode 1:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mFG0Du_DKU (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mFG0Du_DKU)

--- i have a certificate to prove i am a simpleton.---

Hey! Me too! Now I know what we have in common.

Except for awesomeness and good looks, that is.

BTW my mom is a walking WWII documentary, taking the historical events down to a teenager's point of view.  :lipsrsealed:

Captain Ahab was fiction, but peg leg quakers are a real thing.

This photo was taken before his several years of secret missions in the vietnam war by the way.

But don't worry this yankee still has both of his legs. And you mistake my keen sense of self awareness as arrogance.

Or maybe I'm german.

My favorite is "Clash of Wings".  It has the best footage of WWII aircraft of any documentary series I've seen.

Even if you watch lots of documentary series and have seen all of the stuff they typically use and know by memory all of the typical clips used, you will be amazed at the amount of different footage in Clash of Wings.

Other documentary series that I like a lot:

Victory at Sea (an epic series)
Air Aces
Dogfights
Battle 360

Band of Brothers is also nearly a documentary, and it is awesome.

The World at War (1973) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071075/ is the most complete WWII documentary ever made. A tonne of veteran interviews, live footage all in a step by step sequence of events from the Nazi rise to power to the fall of Japan.

Not really, it lacked the facts per minute rate necessary to be a very effective historical document. And it was chock full of those damn interviews. That's pretty much all it was. It was more entertainment than education.

The BBC did a series called "World War 2 People's War" a few years ago, though I don't know if was just in print or both print and a TV docu-series.  A few years ago before my wife's uncle died, a historian working with the BBC interviewed him about his escape from an internment camp in Switzerland and returning to the war.
