Title: Video card on a budget
Post by: loony1 on January 05, 2016, 08:39:51 AM
There are so many video cards out there! :headscratch: :bhead Any tips on a good quality card that will run AH now and maybe in the near future for $120 or less?

EVGA GTX 660 Superclocked. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/EVGA-Nvidia-Geforce-GTX-660-Superclocked-2GB-02G-P4-2662-KR-Video-Card-TESTED-/181935812140?hash=item2a5c382e2c:g:RAkAAOSwv0tVbKE7)  This is a refurbished card, but still carries the manufacturers warranty.

It also depends on the other components you have on your computer. For my AH computer (that's the only game I have on it) I use a 120 GB SSD/3.5 mhz AMD cpu. The GTX 660 TI and runs AH on my 40 inch TV at 60 FPS. That is with normal settings at 1920 x 1080.

I do have a GTX 660 on my 55 inch TV computer(primarily for web surfing). It runs it fine though it could use a better card. There are occasions when the card is at it's limits.

If you could go up to around $200 the GTX 960 cards look good. It is probably a bit overkill for AH, but again that depends on what games your playing and what other components you have.

In order to make a proper recommendation it would be nice to know which monitor you are using, or failing that the native resolution of your monitor. It might also come in handy to know CPU, MB, amount of RAM, and your PSU just to be precise.

My current choice for that price is the nVidia GTX 750 Ti (as I like nVidia products).

You can find various ones on Newegg.com and Amazon.com.

You found a 750 TI for $120.00 or less.
I was trying to stick to the OP budget.

On Newegg, there is a Zotac GTX 750 Ti for $105.  It's a great deal, I think.

But the GTX 660 is faster than a 750 Ti.  There are two specific things which AH3 will take advantage of, which make the 660 a better choice.  The 660 has more shader units and higher memory bandwidth than the 750 Ti.

Correct Skuzz, get the 660.

Thanks for the info guys...i'm currently running a Dell 560..it has a E6700 3.2 GHz Intel dual core Processor......8 GB of ram....I am running it mostly through my 60" LED T.V.s HDMI connection at 1920 by 1080.I looked in to the 750 Ti wanted some other recommendations. Might look in to the 660.

I'm using the 660 and it plays AHII smoothly.  I can't turn everything all the way up, but it's high enough that it looks very nice.
HiTech uses the 660 in his test machine too, I believe.

Yes, Hitech has an NVidia GTX 660 in his development system.  It is not an endorsement.

Speaking from the perspective of an E8400 owner I do not think you will see much more performance than you already have, until AHIII. Once you are in to AHIII the GPU will be more important, but as of now I believe your CPU is holding you back.

Since you have probably been using that same system for a number of years I would not update your video card until you update the entire system. Dell PSUs are notorious for providing just enough power to sustain the system as it was originally built. Of course, if you are running something like a 4## series you will be using less power, but . . .

A GTX 660 is not $120 or less, however.

I don't use prices of used or refurbished stuff as a basis for comparison with new items, but if the poster is comfortable with used stuff, you are correct -- yours is a good post.

Some folks do, some don't.  But as you can clearly see that I told him that it was refurbished and carries a manufacturers warranty.
And you're right it is up to the OP.

The Ebay video card says it has a 30 day DOA warranty. It doesn't say anything about manufacturers warranty. Or does it? I couldn't see it. Evga's site says they gave it a 3 year warranty. So what does an equivalent new card cost? (This one doesn't seem to be available new from substantial channels like New Egg.) Looking on the interweb it seems to go for 400 to 750 dollars from spelling challenged dealers.

A new 660 doesn't seem to be very available currently, as you say.  Amazon has some sellers of new in the range $300-$600 (quite a wide range), but they seem to be little-known 3rd parties.

That's why, when I wanted a video card recently for about $110, I bought a Zotac 750 Ti new from Newegg.  Then I know that I'm getting a new card for sure, and if I have any trouble at all, it is very easy and quick to get it replaced.

EVGA stands behind their warranties (they are transferable), so all of this is much ado about nothing.

What do you do, look up the serial number to find when the warranty started running?  Its not an EVGA refurb but an ebay seller.

Edit--I just sent the seller a question about the warranty. It isn't about the 120 dollars as much as about things not working/mailing/arguing drivers blah blah waste of time.

I see a bunch of these cards now, do you think they are leftovers from bit coin miners?

That would be up to the purchaser, but if I had that budget, I'd get it.   EVGA is the only brand I'd purchase used or new.

For nVidia GPU's, I've had good luck with Gigabyte, Zotac, MSi, and XFX, and (for AMD GPU's) Sapphire and PowerColor.

The only time I had problems with a card (2 in a row) was EVGA, but it wasn't the card that was at fault, it was the morons who decided on the package for the card.  Both times, the cards had snapped off capacitors during shipment.  That was many years ago, and I'm sure that is long since solved.

Well i did buy the GTX 660 off Ebay.  :aokI also snagged up a 650 watt power supply while i was at it (just to be sure a had enough power to run everything)...Like others i do get leery of refurbish things but in the past i have bought a lot of refurbished items here and there, like phones and the such, and they work just like new and even still work to this day. So its not to say that some things marked refurbished can turn out to be real turds but i'm thinking it will be ok. Again thanks guys for all your help in the decision making process and we should find out if everything works out well in about 4 days :airplane: :joystick:

That power supply should be plenty for that card.  I only have a 5 year old 450 Corsair power supply, that I've been using with the 660.  I've had the 660 for 3 years.
I too am leery of buying refurbished, but usually there are more details about the item, as to why it is refurbished, or even an open box deals.

Good luck with the card.  Hope it works as described and meets your needs for now.
