Going to be testing for my license at school in the near future.

Have had a desire to get involved in HAM radio since last year after deciding it was time to turn my hobby of storm chasing into more of a public service. After 11 years it finally dawned on me just how lazy and selfish it was to not participate on that level after witnessing what I have over the years. Looking to start down this path very soon!

Got my license back in the 80's but got out of it in the late 90's .
EDIT: Learning Morse code was a squeak .

Was N5SDQ from 1977 thru 2000 then let the license lapse. Still have a dual bander in the garage 'just in case' I get the bug again.

My grandfather was W3FC and W3LML until he passed. I still have a ton of his cards from operators around the world.

Just finally got around to getting my Extra last week.
Anyone on 40 or 160 meters?

Very popular these days amongst the off road groups, though I often wonder why people post their call signs. Especially when they are so diligent to erase their plate numbers in pics.
Sounds good, works well, but my CV is setup well for off road and the usage is more user friendly. HAM will likely get there some day too.

I got my Licence in 1975 - G4FHA. No equipment at the moment but keep the licence active. :)

There are a lot of off roaders using modified ham radios for illegal use on cb. Per fcc, cb band cannot exceed 5 watts output

I think 4w actually, but yes, many are modifying their CB radios to pass that. Mine is not. Also, if you monitor cb traffic, you will notice some repetitive "discussion" around a certain south east radio shop. Same voices, same conversation, word for word, many times a day. In other words, a recorded advertisement which is also against FCC rules. Not something they are going to follow up on IMO, ever.

I believe you are correct :)
There was a a jammer on 14.275 which took several years to silence. Now there is one around 3843

WTG on your EXTRA class! I am currently studying for mine...tough nut to crack.
We could do 40, 80, or 160 from your location to mine in AR. I have an Ameritron AL-800HFX legal limit amp being built as we speak and am getting antennas up this Spring for 160 through 6 meters. I'll only be able to do about 400 watts on 160 meters, but all other HF I will be able to do 1,500 watts .. BUT ONLY IF NEEDED. Normally, I am a 40 meter monkey and only run about 100 watts on an off center fed dipole -- but it's not working and needs to be replaced anyway with a legal limit capable antenna.

Some of you guys may not know that when Air Warrior was free on AOL there were a BUNCH of amateur radio operators who took advantage of the not so great COMMS on AW and instead met on 80 meters as VOICE COMMS in real time. Air jockey time with REAL radio communications made for some wild radio traffic to listen too and not to mention the other hams on the air not realizing that they were playing a game. :devil
