Yes,depending on where you live!  Any laboratory supply company will have said condenser!  I got mine way back in highschool and it's made of pyrex,it's a wonder it hasnt been broken but I have it carefully stored!

You can make one yourself,it's rather easy with the proper supplies, cooper pipe and some large plastic pipe and I can wipe one up in less than half an hour!

Or you can do it old school and just run the copper through a bucket of water......  Again I can neither confirm or deny! :devil

Buy a gallon of apple cider and let it sit!

Most ciders have preservatives and are pasteurized so they wont ferment, you'd need to get fresh made cider without any additives!

PS: it's been awhile since I've gotten out my chemistry set..... :x

You totally cannot get a juicer and some of favorite sweet fruits to make home-made cider. Also cannot get a decent condenser for reasonable coin online for science projects or college supply companies or surplus...

Yup you can just forget everything stated above

You would have to hold a gun to my head before I would drink moonshine.

While stationed in Alabama in the late sixties, almost every day on the way to the base there would be stories on the radio of bad moonshine.  It could've been propaganda but why take a chance on going blind after drinking bad booze

I do know that if you ever did buy moonshine make sure the guy takes a sip of the product you are buying.  If he won't drink it neither should you.

Both are neurotoxins.  And both down-regulate the receptors they activate, increasing tolerance.  No ASC (altered state of consciousness) is sustainable.

Zack,

There are legal American moonshine distilleries that export. See if England is a destination. Moonshine = single malt before it sleeps for 12 years in a barrel. Or if you can find it, 80 proof drinkable alcohol.

you can buy some kind of corn liquor that they label "moonshine" at most liquor stores in my area.  It's just low proof, unfinished whiskey that they are using to scam morons out of their money, but it is almost moonshine.  If you want to know what real moonshine tastes like, just try some of that off the shelf crap and you can get a fair idea.

In the company I work for, we deal with numerous chemicals (some of them quite nasty).

Of them all, the one that requires by far the most government paperwork and licenses to procure is . . .

Reagent-grade ethanol, which is basically the purest moonshine -- 100% alcohol with no impurities.

I was amazed by this.

Ethanol is pretty noxious toejam. There is not one part of the body that isn't damaged by it, from the bone marrow to the skin and everything between. Its an industrial solvent, bathroom sanitizer, topical germicide, glass cleaner, combustion engine fuel, stove fuel. And people drink it.

Not all alcohol is the same. Ethanol and moonshine are two very different things. Ethanol will kill you, grain alcohol won't. Well, not right away. Ethanol can be made with many things like fibers (grass, corn husk, ect) and can't be processed by the human body. It causes blindness, organ failure and death. It is not to be messed around with. (Insert skull and crossbones here)

You're probably right. I know one will kill you, the other won't. You want to be sure to only use grain and not any fibrous material to make alcohol you drink.

Ethanol is the type of alcohol that is in alcoholic beverages, such as moonshine, vodka, and whiskey.

Methanol is the stuff that will make you blind or kill you, such as in rubbing alcohol.

Rubbing alcohol is usually isopropyl alcohol at 70%,you need a business license and a good reason to purchase 100% iso where I live!

I've heard it's used to extract nonwater solvable ingredients   form a certain type of plant material,so they like to restrict it's availability. As a cabinet maker I often had cause to purchase this solvent, for removing glue of course!

Post by: F6Fraven on February 17, 2016, 11:17:22 PM
This thread has become painful for me to read so I figured I would clarify a few things.
The alcohol we would like to drink is ethanol. In the brain the most noticeable effect of ethanol is its binding and opening of the GABA-A chloride ion channel. This is the same channel that benzodiazepines and barbs. activate. This causes the neurons to become more negatively charged and thus synaptic transmission is reduced (sedative effect.) Downregulation of this channel causes the side effects of alcohol withdrawal.
-Methanol has one less carbon compared to ethanol and it is metabolized into formic acid. It’s the formic acid that is toxic to the eyes.
-Also just a side note that 100% ethanol is technically possible (with a desiccant), but very difficult to achieve. In the distillation process, no matter how many thousand times you try to distil an ethanol-water solution, the max. concentration you can achieve is 98% ethanol, 2% water. Off the top of my head I can’t think of the ratio for other alcohols like methyl or isopropyl, but I would imagine they are similar. If anyone is interested in this just google azeotrope.

F6F,

You are correct, the iso isnt 100% it's 97.x%, but I was just trying to show that "rubbing alcohol" isnt methanol. You can get
methalhydrate,denatured alcohol that is methanol.

And no you cant just add yeast to cider, unless you can get "raw" cider or make it yourself with a juicer. They add a persevative so you cant make it turn "hard"
