I was cleaning the dust from my putter and decided to take the video card out for a better cleaning. I don't know how it was even running. There was so much dust crammed into it. Upon replacing it I shorted my baby out. So I am in the process of building a new puter for the game. Going with the gvx 970. Anyway I will be out for a few weeks. Anyone want to add suggestions on what to add to the build, it would be greatly appreciated. Kimosabe

Look at the Hardware and Software section, lots of information there.
Shortly, an Intel CPU >3.5 GHz, 8 GB of RAM and that 970 is what you're after. The choice of motherboard depends on whether you're planning to overclock or not. For the hard disk, don't take anything "green" because they are meant for low power slow motion storage purposes. An SSD will make the computer start Windows and programs faster, but it won't boost your frame rates at all. A sturdy well breathing case and high quality (not necessarily high priced!) air CPU and GPU coolers. And - this is essential - a very reliable power supply.

You posted that you shorted out your computer....
Do you know what exactly you shorted out? Have you done any trouble shooting on it to find out what component(s) was/were shorted out?
How was you able to determine that you did short/grounded a component out on your computer?
Just curious...

I had something similar like that happen once. Back when AGP was all the rave and the Radeon 9800 pro was top of the line, I cracked the case open to do something (I can't recall what it was) and I find the damn fan had apparently stopped working on the card, got so hot that it melted off as it was laying on the bottom of my case. Surprisingly I had no idea, no artifacts in game or anything. I haven't bought another ATI card since, but then again I'm quick to judge.

Seems to me the fact that the fan melted off and the thing still ran like a charm would be a pretty good indicator of the card quality. A jammed fan isn't the fault of the manufacturer (assuming dust caused it). Anyway, for the money ATI has been good to me for a long long time now.

Oh I know, this was years and years ago and given how I came to find out about it who knows what caused it. Like I said, I just am quick to go "Never again!" and I haven't had any of those moments to make me switch back from nvidia. Same reason I still don't buy western digital drives anymore, I swear I used to replace those things like underwear but I hear good things about the black series I believe it's called? Last time I used them I had the 10k RPM raptors.

HGST NAS drives. They also have a new He drive (helium) in up to 12TB, but they are very rare. The 6TB and 8TB are much easier to find, but they do tend to be SAS drives. Two million hours MTBF.
Buy HGST if you buy WD drives.

I'm pretty sure I shorted out the RAM. I took 800 out of another computer and put it in the one I was playing with. That's when I had the short. But I turned the two putters over to a friend of mine that has a thriving computer business. I told him to use what he could out of them and to upgrade the important stuff. So I had 5 new fans, the case, a power supply at 750 Watts that was new. The motherboard may be OK but I'm not sure. So I'll see what he suggest this week. Miss you guys. Hope to be back soon. Carey Holzman has many videos up on YouTube where he describes how to avoid what you ran into. I think the video I am linking to here is where he describes static and how to avoid it, but certainly the best rules to live by are:
Don't leave the system plugged in.
Ground yourself before reaching into the PC.
Never work on carpet.

Carey has really great hints and does not include the same drama of the Linus videos (maybe somebody enjoys drama).

Yeah, I don't think I linked to the right video, but his assembly videos are all good.

Yep, just heard back from my builder. He said I shorted out the motherboard. He is putting a couple of choices that I can make for my new putter. But I told him no choices on the video card.......NIVIDA ALL THE WAY! ABOUT 5-7days I should be up and running. See you guys soon!!!

Well I had planned to have my putter up and running by today. I got a call From my builder and the new mobo won't accept my hard drive. Soooooo, he is ordering a new hard drive today which will take 3-5 days. Also the gpx 970 Has not arrived yet. So it's a week away maybe 10 days. Am I having withdrawals? Yesssssssssssss! LoL. And once it's up and running I have to reset all the planes one by one. I had just got the hang of TRACKIR. So it's going to take a little time. Hope to see you guys soon. Kimosabe
