That is obviously wrong in the film. Spoiled the whole thing for me really, found it quite realistic apart from that....

I'd say it's their version of Saving Private Ryan. Last I saw it was available on Netfix. Its a true story about a young Korean captured by the Japanese and forced to fight the Soviets. Then captured by the Soviets and forced to fight the Germans. Then captured by the Germans to fight the US. Finally captured by the US at Normandy. One of my all time favorites.

You should watch Attack the Gas Station for an example of a strange Korean action film.
