Your post layout is... interesting, in lack of better words.

What I think you tried to say, is that you'd like to get a GT 740 to substitute your existing onboard graphics. As the phrase says:"4X faster gaming performance compared to integrated graphics".

In one word: Don't.

In more words: If your integrated graphics give you 5 FPS or less, you wouldn't be any happier with 20 FPS or less. The GT 740 is a very entry level card aimed for multimedia such as viewing videos etc. Not gaming.

No matter which card you end up getting, your current power supply (300W) is too weak. You'd have to change that too.

Other than the PSU and graphics, you have a pretty decent rig for both versions of AH.

Bizman is quite right.

From discussions in AH2 I think there may be a fair number of folks who will need video card upgrades but can't afford the latest and greatest. If it's not a rule violation can someone post suggestions for cards that will run AH3 with decent frame rates with minimal graphic setting such as everything disabled but detail?

Benchmarks can only give some directions, but you might want to study http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html (http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html)

As has been told, HiTech uses a GTX660 scoring 4120. I use a Radeon HD 6970 scoring 3472. Our FPS are around 50 with default settings. The lowest card to play AH3 has been said to be a GT 9800 scoring 727, so any card on the link provided should do, more or less.

Cards like HiTech's or mine are widely available as second hand for two-digit prices.

there's a difference between "just getting a card" and actually getting a card that will make a difference.  that is what was pointed out in the posting.

if he will be happy with 20 fps and knows about it then he makes a good buy.  but if 40 bucks will get him a better video card then it would be nice to know before making a buy.

True or False

2 core vs 4 core CPU's don't seem to rate well in AH3 conversations?

The number of cores are irrelevant, as long as there are two or more.  The clock speed of each core matters most.

Actually, that is exactly what is in HiTech's computer.  My work computer has an old E6300 (2.33 Ghz) dual core.

Yes, that old 8400 will work fine.

For some strange reason the motherboard it was on would not load Win7, that's when I went to the AMD Phenom 2 Black edition 4 Core CPU, OC'd to 3.6

I should unload the basement and get this stuff to people who could use it. anyone looking for a Dual Drive Commodore 64 with a fast load cartridge, lol

Thanks Again

ok  in the tower in AH3 beta  I get 8 fps---if I up on a ship dual 5in guns I have seen 24fps-in a manned 37mm I have seen 15 to 24 fps--in a tank in the woods 8 to 10 fps  it's real jittery and tank is hard to control and all this is with all eye candy turn off all sliders all the way down. I can't afford a new computer-or to even to build one even if I knew how. and I dang sure don't want to quit this game. I get bored just watching tv. what am I supposed to do? what do you suggest I do.

You do not need a new computer.  If you want to improve AH3 performance, you need a new video card and power supply.  The 740 is a low end video card and AH3 graphics performance will be dependent on the video card.  Even a 960 would be much better than the 740.

The best solution I can think of for a low budget is to get a second hand higher end video card and a good quality new power supply. Seasonic is known to build quality power supplies. If you study the Passmark chart I linked to, decent cards start about at 3000 points.

For knowing which ones are older and which ones new:

Nvidia cards have three digits in their name. The lower the hundreds, the older the card. The tens tell the relative power within the generation.

In Radeons it's a little bit different. The older HD cards have four digits, the thousands telling the generation and the hundreds telling the power within the generation. The newer Rx ### tell the generation in the hundreds and the relative power both in the digit after R and in the tens.

When reading the chart, bypass the Quadros and Teslas and FirePros, they are built for other purposes than gaming.

Hi Lunatic, Here's some stuff looked up on Newegg and Tom's Hardware. Looking at the hierarchy chart some of the 2GB video cards will perform better than the 740 you looked at for around the same price range. If someone is willing to donate a decent video card you could get a better power supply.

Hi lunatic,

Well we just can't allow you to be bored watching TV, so if you will PM me your mailing address I'll send you 1 of my surplus vid cards for free that should give you better performance than the 1 you currently have.

The vid card I'll send you is an EVGA GTX 670 FTW vid card w\ 2Gb GDDR5 mem. This is 1 of the 1st gen Nvidia Kepler GPU powered vid cards using Nvidia's GPU Boost 1.0 that is factory OC'd on GPU & mem from EVGA. This is the vid card that I bought when I built the current box in my sig some 4 yrs ago & is in excellent condition. It will be packaged in it's original boxing w\ all the stuff that came w\ it. If you want it then PM me & let me know.

I need to also clean out my closet as well so consider this a mutual gesture. Rather give it to someone who can use it than to just throw it away.

 :salute

I have a GeForce GTX 750 Ti (costs maybe about $130 these days) running on a machine with an old i5-2400 CPU.  It gives me about 60 fps in AH3 beta.  Seems totally fine to me.

I've tried it with a GTX 950 ($140 card) as well that also gives about 60 fps in AH3 beta.
