Title: The Long Glide Home
Post by: Arlo on April 04, 2016, 09:15:24 AM
This is related to the windmilling versus dead prop wish and how it'll make a difference in gliding in AH. Film attached.

It's already modeled in AH2 and the propeller model is improved in AH3.   :aok

AH3 include flight model changes? are you sure?

Reducing prop rpm significantly increasing the gliding distance but it seems like most players aren't even aware of that they could adjust the rpm...

You should notice it in a high speed dive followed by a zoom climb to low air speed like a hammerhead/stall turn or tail slide. There's also the lag in RPM with throttle changes.

What exactly is this difference?  Are you referring to the engine noise?  Is there a corresponding effect on what the engine/prop is actually doing modeled in game, or is it just a sound change?

Wiley.

wow that could be a huge difference to the mossie. It has two of those swirrling objects and the cause huge drag when idle and I also suspect that they add huge drag at high speed dives. It is not always a bad thing though. Thanks for the tip. I'll look into it.

It's an improvement in the thrust modeling, there is also a difference in the engine sounds.

Here is a clip of prop. stopped, windmilling with - all the way, and windmilling with + all the way.

Each is checked from 9k to 8k or so.

Seems prop. stopped is only 100fpm less rate of descent than with the prop. windmilling and the - sign all the way.

With + sign all the way and windmilling, descent rate is more than doubled.

Thanks arlo for your results and the motivation to truly see what the effects of all 3 conditions are.
