Title: UConns Womens basketball team
Post by: Hajo on April 06, 2016, 09:38:46 AM
Ya I know, not many on these forums are sports fans.  These young ladies  and their Coach did something unheard of in any sport.

I started adding women's NCAA basketball to my sports viewing years ago because on one lady, Pat Summit.  At Tenn. she coached

some of the best basketball teams I've seen.  Mrs. Summit imho could have coached men's basketball with no problems.  She was that good.

Coach Auriema and the 3 seniors finished with 4 Championships in a row and a record of 151 and 4!  Are you kidding me?  Incredible!

In any sport this is almost impossible to accomplish in four years.  I'm giving credit where credit is due, I've got to.  Well done UConn

and Coach Auriema.  I must say though that Pat Summit is still my number one.  Alzheimer's took her from the sport far to soon.

I live in Connecticut and I'm fed up with hearing about them. I know I'll sound like an old fart, but I'd rather they focus on their academics instead of the news making them sound like the a new set of apostles with Auriema as Christ himself.

I know I'll sound like an old fart, but

You sound like an old fart!  ;)

When I was at the University of Michigan, I disdained the sports program.  Now that I, too, am an old fart, I'm really keen on it and think it's great for the school, including for academics (since it brings in notice and a lot of money).  If a sports program costs a school a lot of money, I'm with you -- they should instead spend it on academics.  My guess is that basketball is above breakeven for UConn, though.

I ran track at Fort Hays State Universtiy and loved it.  However,  men's basketball program was worshiped because they won the Div II national championship and only undefeated team in the nation (1996). The players were given too much "easy ride" and made it difficult for a lot of other athletes.  Luckily the mens and womens track team held the hieghts combined GPA in the nation beating out the Ivey Leage schools (they still continued to preformed great academics marks) ........but we were not worshiped or got the easy pass.  We attended class, make good grades, stayed out of trouble and graduate. Come to think of it, I never seen any of the basketball players on campus. Sigh, sigh

I follow Minnesota's WNBA Lynx.  They're more fun to watch than the Timberwolves.  Seimone Augustus, Minnesota's own Lindsay Whalen and someone you Connecticut residents might know, Maya Moore are all very good players but the women Gophers Rachael Banham has been on a tear with three games over 40 points this season (games of 60 and 52 points in February alone).  I hope she ends up with the Lynx.
