You also have to know what you are looking at, you saw the Brewster but did not react to the threat, instead you turned towards him and set yourself up for being killed.
It takes a lot of practice but you need to learn to predict the future. You need to be able to see what the cons are going to do by looking at how they maneuver, were they are going to be 5 seconds from now. That way you can separate between the threats and the targets. When you see a plane like the Brewster in the film you must realize that his intention is to kill you (and that he is a great threat) and know what to do about it.
Its a lot of information to process, what planes are around me and what are their intentions? What are their strengths and weaknesses compare to my plane? How much E do they have? How much E do I have? And so on.
