Title: Historian Arlo?
Post by: Brooke on April 08, 2016, 02:26:47 AM
Arlo, I've seen you mention that you are trying to get an academic appointment in history, is that correct?
Fill us in on the details!
I hope you get it, man -- that would be awesome!
My uncle was a long-time history professor at Beloit College, with a special interest in WWII history. I loved talking about WWII books and movies with him.

I've decided to pursue a PhD in History. Pretty much simple as that and it sounds rather lofty, considering I'm just getting started on the Bachelor's or rather an associate's degree in pursuit of. I'm at that point where most were at 18 and the world was their oyster (only I'm the guy in his 50s that had a stroke and remembered I once had dreams and it would be nice to achieve one of them before I pass off this mortal coil).
So don't let me come off as an authority so much as one who passionately aspires and has decided to actually go for it. I anticipate an eye-opening experience. It will be some time, obviously, before I get to pick and choose specialties.
Honestly, the AH community is chock-full of 'amateur' historians (quotes to indicate I find most of them rather knowledgeable on the subject and merely retain such status due to it not being an actual profession). I'm not sure if Tiff is degree'd in history but I kinda feel like I may be trying to follow in his footsteps. The wife and I are already planning to head to Europe soon ('soon' being relative to step-son's graduation from high school in a year and a half plus settling some family affairs) and I hope to be visiting many of the places he has. Regrettably, I'll not be able to meet many of the amazing pilots from history that he has. It may even involve school abroad and an extended stay (researching the possibilities).
I suppose I'm getting ahead of myself, at this stage (but the excitement of the pursuit has bit).

A worthy pursuit. Best of luck Arlo.

Thank you, sir. Now, I better not embarrass myself. :)

As apple pie. But, more importantly, I am a child of the Earth (and of the universe). Are you asking how I identify myself?
I'll also be taking philosophy.

I'm currently at the end of my third year as a history major. Its completely worth it - don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise.

What area of history are you planning on specializing in? Once you get through the first few basic courses there are nearly limitless choices of specialized courses in history.

I haven't done much studying of the Spanish-American War, but I have done a little. I can recommend a book that describes the war against the Spanish and later the guerrillas in the Philippines.
"A War of Frontier and Empire" The Philippine-American War 1899-1902. by David J Silbey. There's alot about the US navy action in Manila harbor that is really interesting. Its a good read, and not too long. :aok

Have you read Hugh Thomas' book yet? It remains the only history I've known, of any period, any place, that is - so far as my natural skepticism can discern - thoroughly objective.
OTOH, it is a bit dry.

Now that I read back over this, I realize we're talking about two entirely different wars. Thomas' book is about the Spanish Civil War, not the Spanish American War.
