Title: Faster uploads?
Post by: Chalenge on April 25, 2016, 12:08:06 PM
Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but it is not directly related to hardware, but connection instead.

I want to know what kind of connection you would have to have in order to get connections of 30MB up? I wish there existed a place where you could go to see the faster services available. I know there is a 2Gig service somewhere, but that's probably down? What's the fastest up there is, and where can you find it?

I don't know what you currently have, but with suddenlink cable here I have 1gig down and 40 up. Way more than I ever need for what I use it for, but I watch a lot of netflix streaming HD, and downloading large files through steam and what not so I went with their highest tier so I wouldn't get nailed with data overages. They just now started offering unlimited here again with that tier as well.

I live in the country pretty much. Near the city, but far enough out to lose good Internet. I get 16 down and .7 up. My family is still growing, so we will be moving. . . somewhere.

30MB/s is, roughly, about 360Mb/s connection speed.

Many U.S. ISP's offer synchronous speeds, for business account only.

I know all of you who've posted in this thread understand MBps vs Mbps etc....

but for the majority, they don't understand it, or what not, and think their 50 Mbps ( or 50 Mb/s ) download is like "supafast"..... heh

there's a little difference between a Byte and a bit....

My bad,..you are correct TC.

MB/s = Mega Bytes / second
Mb/s = Mega bits / second

Mega = 1024 * 1024

A Byte = 8 bits

The reason it it not an even multiplier is due to there being bits between the data which are used for control and signaling.

I think you'd need to contact your local providers for business service, depending on where you are.

See what Metro-E runs.  I used to have price lists from what we purchased, but I don't know where they are.  They can be found online.

It seems Comcast has a home 300Mbps service, and Google Fiber is around in certain areas.

Yeah, I already know I'm out of luck here. I was hoping to find a google listing or something that tells you the super mega hotspots. No joy I guess.

Here in central Canada, I have a cable 250 mbit down 20 mbit up, and a fiber/fios/whatever through Infinet that is 260 down 30 up standard.  For 10$ Canadian per month (8 US or so) they double my upload to 60mbit, it's still available on their page too, pretty standard deal.  The one through the phone company/fiber has never tested less than rated speed for me, up or down, so long as the test server can handle it.  60mbit up, I usually see 7 to 9 megaBYTES upload speed, which is in fact a bit faster than what they rated it for.

Same with my cable on the downside at least, I've seen 33 megabytes down when it should only by around 31 with the bit/byte conversion and their rated 250mbit max speed on the contract.

What vexes me is how some Euros in the Northern Euro countries here have even faster speeds than I get, all through wireless apparently, and for cheap rates too.  For my fiber connex I pay 120$ after bundle discounts, say 85 ish USD per month right now, with no bandwidth cap, and I've done 1300gb before and they didn't say a peep, although I'm usually less than that. Cable company has an 800gb cap, but they don't whine until you hit around 1500 or so from what I've seen and heard.

Chalenge, I do have such a thing, I'll find it and link it later it's on another PC - it shows all the "Great" areas in the USA to get the fastest bandwidth, including the test areas for Google and other companies using that 1gb stuff and whatnot.

I'm hoping Google Fiber makes it out here to Los Angeles soon, I want the 1 Gbit/s download/upload speeds Google Fiber advertises.

^Ack- My local ISP just rolled out the 1gbit in my area, and other than downloading way too many games on Steam when they have sales it's mostly way more than I ever need for myself but nice to see in speedtests nonetheless. Go figure soon as they started offering it, they brought back unlimited data which they haven't had since Suddenlink bought Cox here.

I live in a Stockholm suburb in Sweden, I pay about $40/month for 100/100 mbit, using a fiber connected to my house.

If I want I can upgrade it to 1gb/1gb for ~ $90/month. but currently 100/100mbit is ok for me and my daughters.

Total install total cost was ~$1700, for the fiber to house digging  and in-house double cat-6 conectors for most rooms cost another ~$1500 (concrete house, where cellar serve as  bomb-shelter).

I live in the US and I pay $45/month for 3 Mbps down and 0.25 Mbps up, and I believe that comes with a 150GB data limit.

USA number one!!!  ;)

It will vary, depending on where you live in the U.S.

I have a 60Mb/s down and 4Mb/s up for $40.00 U.S and no data limit.

Ha! In the PI our family there has 2G/2G with no data limit. Of course, the infrastructure there can be down for a week at a time, but then you don't have electric either.

I'm using AT&T here on their U-verse plan. I just went back to their Direct TV service when they offered unlimited data as a bundle. Their offer to enhance our speed was not attractive since it involved paying up front and then waiting an undetermined period for the service to even be available.

We need to move anyway because as my family expands further we are going to be out of room.

You poor folks need to move to Indiana. All I can get is DSL over ancient phone lines. I feel really good when it exceeds 1.5Mbps down and 700kbs up.

I finally found this search engine:

http://www.broadbandmap.gov/internet-service-providers/

Through it I was able to find an area within fifty miles that will allow 100/50, which should allow me to do what I am planning.

Thanks for your help.
