Title: FOV in AH3?
Post by: HamrDown on April 27, 2016, 01:38:41 PM
I have set my FOV to 106 as it is in AH2. However, I am hearing that the sweet spot should be around 100. With 100 setting the HUD is bigger and graphics seem better, but, I cannot see how much ammo is left or view some of the flight gauges. Someone suggested mapping Look down to a button on my flight stick, but this is rather inconvenient. Yes, I know real pilots did have to look down at some of their instruments. So, a few questions...
1. Is it my perception or reality that the graphics are better when the POV is set lower? I run my monitor at 1920x1080 (24in)
2. Are the frame rates impacted by setting the POV lower?
3. Is there any sort of chart to show the best POV for various monitor settings?

You can also simply pan you forward view down slightly, press F8 press key pad 2 and 8 to set it where you want, press F10 to save.

Reset is simply Home key, the F10

I also use this feature a lot when flying formation.

Its always going to be a trade off. A narrower field of view should look more natural, give better frame rates, make enemies appear larger and instruments clearer on the screen. OTOH there will be less overlap between snap views making it more likely you will lose sight of an enemy and less of the dashboard will be visible in the forward view. Personally I am trying 95 degrees in AH3, down from 102 in AH2. The monitor size has a bearing on this but so does the FPS your PC can put out, your eyesight, whether you use snap views and so on.

Thanks Gents. I did try 90 and what a difference in clarity, but I do lose seeing instruments and enemies better. I am fixed working now to find the right mix from 90-102 range.

Hitech,

Thanks. I set my POV at 95 and used your method, worked very well, better graphics and good FOV.  :aok

Thanks a lot, now I won't know until I test 95. Though........ the drones never stood a chance at 60 heheheehe....... :O

So true.

I had settled on a FOV in AH3 of 90 as this FOV choice seemed to give me the closest I could get to the default FOV of 80 but at the same time I could keep up reasonably well w\ view tracking using my Combatstick's hat switch set up to pan the views. I found it even harder for me to track using snap views vs pan views as I had a tendency to "over scan" and lose track of a con using snap views.

The view tracking issue using my hat switch is the only reason for me not using the default FOV of 80 in AH3.

I had initially used the hat switch's back view position (I never programmed this position in AH for RL purposes) to lower the front view 10 degrees down view so that I could see the lower cockpit panel instruments until Hitech changed the default forward view to the current one....this fixed it all for me so I don't use the hat back view position any more.

Since I also use a 27" monitor using 2560 x 1440 native res this helps to maintain more "natural FOV" aspect to help w\ view tracking up close but does make viewing at distances a little harder but not impossible.
