Post by: waystin2 on May 08, 2016, 08:10:23 AM
My first CIC this week and I am realizing how hard it is to meet everyone's requests and the requirements of the write-up.  :bhead

First time is the worst, it gets easier from there.   Almost impossible to give everyone their preferred rides every frame, so don't sweat that.

Just mix it up, do what you can to keep folks out of repeat rides.

Don't let the Captain fool ya either, he prefers his sheep in the front seat with him  :rofl

The thing to remember is if you put in the effort, no matter what you decide, most will appreciate your efforts.

Also there are many resources and experienced people that can be utilized to help you along the way. Use them when necessary.

But..............there will always be a vocal minority that will bust your chops over anything they have issue with no matter how minor.

Good luck and I hope you have fun and success with this task.

ok so he has a point.

waystin, this is what i do. i look at what they flew last frame, and i look at what they're asking for, i try to give them something different, but in their list. there are some squads that are really good with fighters. i try to give them fighters most of the time, but will toss them in bombers now again, especially if its a large squad ie JG11. Same with bomber squads.  i go down the list and i use the large squads first and then move to the smaller ones. sometimes you need 2 small squad to make up on larger squad. this makes it easier. try using and excel spread sheet, it will help you keep things straight, copy and paste where ever possible. then just assign them as best you can. give them a flight path if you want to take it that far, or leave it up to them to get there and get the job done. sometimes it works sometimes it does. just be ready on email or on 150 on Friday night to answer questions. hopefully if you have any major mistakes, someone will pick up on it before Friday night and you'll have time to fix it. just try to have fun with it, and do the best you can.

most times i get 3d frame cic so its easier to see what they flew in the last 2 frames. if you need help with it, call me you have my number, ill help you out with it.

Remember though we are supposed to share the burden of bombers with all the squads. I do not favor any squad for fighters (no matter how good they might be) when I do CiC duty nor do I pick large squads for bomber duty over small squads as a rule. Go to the well too often and the large squads get tired of being tapped for bombers.

As a for instance. I recall a frame where we had some Me 262s do divvy out (this was a few years ago), I gave them to a small squad who had never had them in all likelihood. Part of being a CiC is also about being a good game manager...at least in part. You want your side to have fun as well as win.

I do try to get a squad the ride they might like if they have not had it in awhile. Say a USAAF P-38 squad asking for escort duty in P-38s or a historical Fw 190 squad where you have given them fighters and maybe you can squeeze some 190s there way instead of 109s. That sort of thing. That is covered in the "ride preference" parameters we have from frame to frame.

...I get strategizing about the squad group you have to work with and there is nothing wrong with that but let's remember rule #1 in FSO is having FUN.  :salute

Back to my spreadsheet.....

Some gave me a good advice when I did my first CiC and still stand by it, "If you don't like what you were assigned in, you be CiC next time"

Welcome to FSO Waystin.  The first time you are CIC and you view the requests vs the objectives, you realize what an evil little game this is... You put together the best plan, you try to distribute the load and at the back of your mind you think you are dancing when someone else called the music.  You know what?  You are!  You do the best that you can and hope that real life doesn't leave you 20 players short.  The first time that you are CIC you apologize to all those squads that get bad rides... Sorry man, I did the best I could.

Now, pay no attention to the man behind the green curtain.

The secret is "just one more squad, if I had just one more squad this would work".

Two words Waystin: Flight Leads.

Plan your mission objectives around squads you trust to do the job. Assign those squads Flight Lead status over the remaining squads at each objective. Let them coordinate the mission from there. I typically give this duty to the squad with the primary bomber for a strike mission and the best bomber killer for a defensive mission. Try to avoid micro-managing, it usually does not work.

Good luck.  :salute

Also, have your squad help you with comms and assign one as squad leader to achieve your own squads objectives. You have enough to do already without trying lead your squad and eveyrone else's. Delegate, delegate, delegate!  :bolt:
