So, I've run into the apparently common windows 10 start button failure. I did a google search, and came up with the following:
http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/has-your-windows-10-start-menu-stopped-working-here-are-four-ways-to-fix-it-11364000314532
The problem is, when I try to run the sfc /scannow, i get the error that I have to be an administrator. Now, I'm the ONLY account on this PC, so I don't know how I wouldn't be the administrator, and since I can't open the start menu, I have no idea how to change that status.
Does anyone have any advice?

Is it just the start menu or the entire task bar? It's a known issue that Avast doesn't always play nice with Windows 10 and can cause the task bar to lock up.
In the event you are not:
Use Cntrl+Shift+Esc to open task manager
File>Run new task
Type in powershell or cmd (both run the same command so it really doesn't matter
MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE THE OPTION ENABLED TO RUN TASK AS ADMINISTRATOR. Even if you are the only user there are aspects that are kept "closed" to keep people who don't know what they are doing from tampering with something that can trash their whole OS.

I right click on my start icon, problem solved

So, got it running in admin, ran the scan and got this:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios.

See if this helps, the original post was in regards to Windows 7 but it should still apply to windows 10.

Edit: Try this first. Reopen command prompt as an administrator and type this in exactly (or copy and paste).

Tried the restore health thing to no avail. Followed the steps in the link, and, here's the frustrating part, nothing was isolated. I never found a single app that caused the issue, but all is now magically well...
