Boeing Co. on Tuesday said it had signed an agreement to sell jetliners to Iran, in what would be one of the Islamic republic’s biggest deals with a U.S. manufacturer since trade sanctions on Tehran were eased.
Details of the transaction haven't been disclosed by Boeing, although Iranian Transport Minister Abbas Akhoundi told state televisionTuesdaythat the deal could have a value of up to $25 billion, according to the Associated Press.
“Boeing confirms the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with Iran Air expressing the airline’s intent to purchase Boeing commercial passenger airplanes,” the world’s largest plane maker said.
Iran‘s airlines have indicated a dire need for both medium-haul jets like Boeing’s single-aisle 737 and long-haul aircraft like its 777 and 787 Dreamliners.

UPDATE: Looks like it's going to be 50% off retail. Iran has a coupon...
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran's official IRNA news agency is reporting the deputy transport minister as saying that his county will only pay half of the announced price for 80 new Boeing planes, given the reductions in its purchasing options.
According to the Sunday report, Asghar Fakhrieh Kashan says that despite an initial $16.8 billion deal with Boeing to purchase 80 passenger planes, "Regarding the style of our order and its options, the purchase contract for 80 Boeing aircraft is worth about 50 percent of the amount." He did not elaborate.

Iranian Govt propaganda for internal consumption? They do that ALL the time.
Kind of a, "Yes we made a deal with the Great Satan, but we are really stiffing them." type of thing.
But, these days, we can't really count on what US/wsstern media is saying either.
With the repeal of the Smith Mundt act, it is now perfectly legal for them to lie thru
their teeth! And we have seen plenty of examples of it lately.
:headscratch: what are we going to do when we can no longer tell what is REAL?
How can people make correct informed decisions, when the sources of information can't be trusted? This gives me an incredibly apprehensive feeling in my gut!
Historically, we all know this goes to a very scary place!

what is real, is the contract. the story in the news does not tell all and never will. Before knowing the facts i would not get upset. In business, deals are made. Boeing got the contract. 80 planes? wow, that is a big order. In my experience, getting the customer to agree and follow through on the deal is not a sure thing. If I can increase the chance of the contract being finished (i.e. me getting the money) maybe i sweeten the deal. No need to get panties in a bunch, i guess this deal was celebrated by Boeing.

As far as i know the airlines always get a big discount on the "list prize" so it would not be surprising if that is the case here too.
