1950s RAF, so just about any from that era.

How do you know it's a 50s era? It's essentially an Eglin 8 day with a different face, same lecoultre movement.

USAF T-37s also had them installed.  UPT instructors frequently told student pilots when flying solo and an emergency occurred, to maintain aircraft control first and "wind the 8 day clock until it won't wind anymore" before doing anything else.

USAF T-37s had Air Ministry RAF clocks?

If you look inside the case you may find that it was manufactured in the USA and exported to Britain.

Edit: Looks like you answered your own question.

lecoultre is american. But it's a RAF mk4 clock. The movement is 1941, last time it was serviced was 1956, it has Air Ministry mark and ref # 6H/2149. I realize can't know what exact type of plane it came out of, but I would like to know when they started using the mk iv clock.

Let me be more specific, they had "8 Day Clocks" installed.  Who made them?  Who cares?

:airplane: This is the same clock used in the Ryan PT-22, (At least I know where there is a FLYING PT22 which has this clock in it!

Are you sure you're not thinking of this clock?

Also I was mistaken, Elgin does not have Lecoultre movement. Chalange is right as far as I can discern, I just want to know how he knows.

Be extremely careful with these. Most of that vintage had radium paint on the movements.

I've used a lot of radiation survey meters, but never that exact model.  *IF* he was reading the meter right, 80mr/hr is actually dangerous.  While performing industrial gamma radiography, we set the boundaries at 2 mr/hr.  Industrial radiographers aren't supposed to get more than 5000 millirem/year, it would be quite easy to surpass even that high limit if that instrument is truly as radioactive as he said.

Was 8000 counts per minute which is about 8 mrem per hr. As an alpha, it's dangerous if ingested.

Ever watch The Poisoners Handbook? Interesting segment about radium.
