I have 3 computers that run 64 bit windows 7. My gaming machine, which updates consistently, and two laptops. I've had problems with the two laptops. I can check for updates for hours in control panel and nothing happens. I have searched the internet forums and have tried several of the recommended fixes. On one laptop nothing worked for two months, then suddenly, yesterday, it updated after I had been on line for about an hour. I have no idea why because I had done nothing new. Still no luck with the 2nd laptop. It updated last month but now no updates have downloaded after three hours. This seems to be a widespread problem and there are many "fixes" posted on the internet. Unfortunately, the ones I have tried don't seem to work. I'm sure some of you have had the same problem. Has anyone found a fix that works?

This is due to Microsoft. Leave the computers on and manually get the updates. That should get them overnight.

Thanks. Not sure what you mean by manually. I have it set to download important updates and allow me to select which I want to install. Is that what you mean?

I had the same problem but updated to win10 so I never got it figured out. You might want to try turning auto updates on. Not much help I know but whatever it is you now know you aren't the only one.

Disable auto-updates then go to Start->Control Panel->Windows Update and run it manually. Let it sit, as Microsoft will delay the updates up to 18 hours.
It is just another way to try and coerce people to go to Windows 10. Just be careful which updates you get. There are updates which will slow Windows 7 by about 15%.

That's just what I did. after about 8 hours it told me the computer was up to date but the history showed the most recent update as 7/19. Both my other W7 computers got 11 0r 12 updates on 8/10 on 8/11. I do need to go through your list. I haven't removed those updates from the computer in question. I installed never 10 instead.

When I finally decided to update this computer to 64 bit windows 7, I had the same problem, wouldnt update. I had to hand feed it one update at a time especially the ones that dealt with the windows update system itself before it started to go on its own. Even then I could only install one update at a time then had to restart the computer otherwise if I tried to install a second or let it search for them itself, the update program locked up and wouldnt search for any.
I went online and lost count on how many boards I read talking about patches, fixes, and other tweaks to get it to update properly. One of them finally did it and now it works like it should especially when I went to skuzzys thread and removed and blocked the updates that will choke out the computer, especially the one that blocks windows 10
