I am still using the 9## series (GTX 980) and as of Monday, 15 Aug 2016 the latest release is 372.54. Be advised that there is now an option for Windows 10 32-bit, and 64-bit (has been for a year), but also Windows 10 Anniversary 32-bit, and 64-bit. These drivers should be considered as mutually exclusive, so make sure you make the right choice.
If you are a VR user it is recommended that you read the notes under "Limitations in This Release" for the driver of your choosing, as well as Fixed Issues for the version in question (specific to Steam VR), and under OS specific issues such as "Windows 10 Issues."
Windows 7 is still the only version of Windows that does not suffer the random SLI/UEFI error 14 bug.

I used to update drivers a lot. Had a couple bad experiences even though I wiped the previous drivers.
My experience, if it ain't broke don't fix it!

Theres really no reason to constantly muck up your drivers unless there is an issue you are having, which most of the time the new drivers are just for new games and video cards.

If your NVIDIA based graphics card is a newer model, it is recommended that you update your graphic card drivers regularly to get the best performance and experience from your PC. If your NVIDIA based graphics card is an older model, then we suggest you update your drivers only if you are experiencing problems while running newer software on your PC.
Updates to the operating system can create a situation in which a driver may need to be updated. Updating to Windows 10 Anniversary is an excellent example, yet any in-between update could require an updated driver as well. New video games that push your system to the limits may also create a situation in which drivers need to be updated. For the most part Nvidia only updates SLI profiles through the driver updates and there is no other way to get them. When a new version of a game is released (AHIII for instance) then it is a really good time to investigate an update. Each and every time there is an update you owe it to yourself to read through the release notes of any new driver version.

An example of possible problems: I was called to fix a Win7 computer which after a Windows update refused to run certain games, such as Solitaire and Spider. Some other games worked OK. A system restore fixed the issue for a day or two until the update broke it again. So I did some deeper investigation. It appeared that the video card had been changed from a low-mid class AMD to a slightly more powerful Nvidia card roughly a year ago. The AMD software was still present, the Nvidia drivers had been installed using the CD. Using DDU (http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html) I wiped both away, following with the install of the latest recommended drivers. Issue solved.
Note that the double driver install had worked flawlessly for a year until a single Windows update caused a conflict.

there comes a point where a driver update will not benefit your hardware anymore. There are so many combinations of hardwares, softwares that once you get the right match for you your done with updates.
Challenge covered this pretty good I think. Many are dropping new cards in or changing OS, its a good discussion right now. With the advent of VR things are gonna be a changing.

I second that reading thru the driver release notes before you update is a good idea to do as this is where you'll find out if a driver update is viable.
