I need a submission for a contest on another board and I've got it whittled down to two.
#1 I like the reflection from the water and the ice chips around the hole.

#2 I think I favor this one because of the texture of the ice, but the fishfinder screen is just a blurry gray blob with the cord blocking part of it, which annoys me more than it probably should.

The bottom one is better because of the unusual viewpoint. Also the ice has an interesting texture up close.

I like the second one too, but it has some exposure and focus issues. If you have some photo editing software you might be able to improve it. I took a real quick crack it with Lightroom just to show the difference. But it is harder to edit a jpeg and I'm sure if you spent some more time you could definitely tweak.
It is a really cool shot, so I hope I don't sound critical just trying to help.
Good luck with your contest, even if it is a sin to talk about ice fishing in summer! :furious

That actually looks really awesome except for the graining on the fishfinder and case, in hindsight I should have just set that off to the side. I'm not too concerned about shooping it or anything since it's more of a just for fun sort of contest and it's not on a photography site.

Hey man it's almost September, then October, then November and maybe fishing by Thanksgiving. Time to start counting down the days. Hoping The Farmers Almanac is right and we get an apocalyptic type winter. Last winter sucked, and the summer season hasn't been much better.

I like the second one too
So do I. The perspective makes a difference.

You're right about the reflection and the ice chips on the upper one.
Then again, the rod against the sky looks very nice as does the texture of the ice on the lower one. Also, the composition looks more fishing orientated, the upper one being more like "beautiful sunrise with random stuff in the front".
On both pictures the fishfinder bag looks like a midget peeing into the hole (is that what annoys you too?) so some photoshopping is definitely needed in either case. Maybe TheBug's edit is a little too bright but at least it shows what the black lump is. The same editing would make the ice chips really shine on the upper image.

Thanks for the perspectives guys, and Bug for the new Desktop.

2 hands down. Needs to be adjusted to light some detail on the bag.

I'm thinking the second one...more for the fact your central focus point (Bag,rod, hole, bold horizon) is in the center....all the textures look nice too but become more prevalent with the bottom pic not only because of the angle and proximity but also you do not focus on the messy clutter of the background so much...
PS...this is coming from a person who knows nothing about photographing....just and person who knows what he likes when he sees it

Thanks for the reply bud. BTW, did you ever figure out who that shade was in the SBD that killed you after you shot his wing off? :noid

Airport beach or the dam, I'll be the guy who's there at about 4:45am and leaving about the time everyone else shows up. Or Wazee when I feel like dealing with the commute.
