Title: Why we do it... Every Friday Night
Post by: Nefarious on August 28, 2016, 12:47:04 AM
It's a long flight from Buka to Rabaul.

You know their is going to be enemy there. The bombers are under attack. You somehow survive the initial engagement, even manage to shoot down an enemy plane.

You try to regroup, more enemy trickle in. They've mustered a second wave of defenders, they start to outnumber you. Then the unthinkable, damage from an unseen enemy. Your left wing has been shot in half by 20mm cannon shells.

It's a long flight from Rabaul to Buka.

Being somewhat of a history buff and realism freak Friday was perfect. LCA spent an hour and twenty minutes flying cap over a fleet in KI-61s and no takers. No scout, no fighter sweep, no bombers. Lots of radio traffic from the other task group just a keypad or so away but no action for ours. We descended to Rabaul to refuel and found low and slow F-4U's bouncing another squad who was landing. Wheeee.
