Aside from the ukrainian and the pole, why do all but three of them have masculine surnames? Are only three of the soviets in the photo russians?

They have nothing to do with the NRA. Not sure you can even own a weapon in Russia.
Would be interesting for someone from Russia to enlighten us on the PERSONAL ownership of guns there.

part 3 of ghosts of the ostfront talks about female snipers soldiers and pilots. he even suggested the 20-30 percent increase in troops by enlisting women help win the war. Also, that the germans never had their women fight, giving 13 year old boys a gun but not using a grown woman. there was also a squad of sexy young females that were known for their deadly ruthlessness.

Another colourised photo of Soviet sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko, the most successful female sniper in history credited with 309 kills (which included 36 enemy snipers).

Russia prohibits private possession of handguns and automatic weapons. They also require a license for all guns that must be renewed every five years. Long guns including "assault rifles" are allowable.
Overall less restrictive than many places in the United States.
