After about 5-10 minutes from log in and with normal sound thru the speakers, everything coming through the speakers is in slow motion with a garbled echoing metallic sound. Voices are very hard to distinguish. To get rid of this condition, I have to log out, restart the computer, and log back in. Sound is normal for 5-10 minutes and then the same issue presents itself. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! :salute

Need a DXdiag to provide any help.
-
As Chalenge said, a DXdiag output would be very useful.
An educated guess is it might be either heat related or a failing power supply.
-
puma do you hear a hiss coming out of the speakers when playing music? if so, that is your power suply going out.

Is this in game? AH2 or AH3? ....normal web browsing? Its all in the details!

Actually, this sounds like he has sounds set to 5.1 and is listening in stereo, but a DXdiag would help more.

Here's the first section of the DXDIAG, full version is attached:

This problem only occurs while in game, AH2. I'm setup with a 5.1 speaker system. No hissing while playing music. This never occurred before upgrading to Windows 10. I did upgrade the drivers as suggested in a previous post. This afternoon, I played for nearly and hour before the "slow motion, garbled" sound started. The only way to get rid of it is to log out and restart the computer. Thanks for the help gents! :salute

The date on your audio files is still showing 2010. Those are not likely to interface well with W10, but maybe. . .
Which X-Fi are you using?
-
Creative SB X-FI. I looked in the sound setup for the drivers to update them. The "update drivers" button is greyed out/non selectable.
Qualifier: I know just enough about the interior of a computer to get in trouble. So, I very much appreciate the observation and help from those of you who are tech savvy IT experts.
Thanks! :salute

Well, I want to help, but I need a better ID on that sound card. X-Fi comes in several flavors. X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro, XtremeGamer, XtremeLive, HD, Platinum, Titanium, and others.
I have a Titanium on one of my systems (an archived product according to Creative) and its driver is dated 7 Mar 2014.
You can find a complete list here:
http://support.creative.com/Products/product_list.aspx?catID=1&CatName=Sound+Blaster#
If your card truly is a plain-Jane X-Fi, then it is at the end of its service life and there will not be an official driver for it.
-
Update: found the device manager, searched online for new sound drivers. Response was that the drivers are the most up to date.

I appreciate your help, Challenge. I'm out of town until Friday and will look again when I get home. My system is several years old and your analysis may be spot on. Thanks again! :salute

Well, I don't see any interfering audio devices, so I don't know where else to look. I was hoping someone else might chime in, or Skuzzy would return.
If no one else has anything the only thing I know to suggest is a newer audio card. You see, the DirectSound acceleration method changed under Windows 8, 8.1, and 10, so I think that's the culprit. Worse, it doesn't play well with earlier AMD CPUs or video cards (I can't remember which). I'm just not that familiar with the CPUs or video cards either one, so I'm not much help with your Radeon. I know your CPU quite well, because I ran one for a long time.
-
Thanks Challenge! I appreciate the help. I'm also hoping someone else has an idea. I'm the guy who "doesn't know what he doesn't know" with this level of expertise.
-
If you can, try to get a known good power supply for testing. Your local builder shop might be kind enough to lend or hire one if you look like you'd buy a new one from them.
-
Thanks Bizman! I'll look into that also. Is there a way to measure the installed power supply's performance output or is a matter of symptoms like my randomly occurring echo, garbled sound?
If it turns out to be the power supply, is it best to get one of the current output or one of more power output?
Thanks again!
-
Testing a power supply is quite difficult, the small testers are merely voltage meters and can't tell how the PSU performs under stress, nor can they tell about ripple and other anomalies. They can be useful, though, if the PSU is severely failing. Testers that are able to tell the quality of the power output include an oscilloscope plus other hi-tech gear. Symptoms like sound problems or random blue screens are often the first signs of failure.
As for a new power supply, rather than getting a powerful one by numbers, you should pay for reliability. At the moment it seems that Seasonic makes the best supplies, available also under other brands. You should get enough power, but not too much. A huge amount of extra power will cause stability issues sooner or later. Let's say, some 20% more than your video card manufacturer recommends should be enough.
If you end up getting a new PSU, try to find reviews of the one you're thinking about. The best ones I've recently read include reverse engineering the unit to find out the quality of the components used.
-
Bizman could easily be on the right track. PSUs don't last forever, unfortunately, and audio anomalies are on of the signs of a failing PSU. I had never heard of one acting the way you describe, but I'm sure there are a lot of possibilities outside of my experience.
-
Thanks gents! I do appreciate your insight and suggestions. I'll let you know what I find out.
