I took the lazy route and just used pre-finished trim and plywood for the top. And then I took the lazy route again by just buying using 4 sticks of Unistrut to make the frame. My only regret is spending as little $ as possible on a 5" hole saw because it oscilated like crazy and caused my dad's old Craftsman drill to catch fire (I was nice and replaced it with a Milwaukee). If i were to do it over again I'd use thin Unistrut because this thing weighs a ton, I could barely flip it over when I finished but then again, each leg is rated to support 3,000 pounds and that might be useful someday.
Total cost including bolts & spring nuts was about $175 and in the end I'm happy with it for now.

Nice work!

Looks very sturdy, Bobo. Most of us need something very industrial to bang our foreheads on.

Well done BoBo! Put some kind of sealer on that top or it will start looking ratty real quick.
Mine cost a bit more but I did make a matching cabinet :)

Absolutely,
Looks like yours required more tooling than mine. All I needed was a chop saw, table saw, 2 drills, 9/16 wrench and a screwdriver. I've always been a fan of corner desks. I'm going to do a shallower top at some point and make it wide enough for 2 gamestations at some point. One of the reasons I did the frame out of Unistrut was so that I can easily reconfigure it later on.
It's like erector set for adults.

Oil hardened, Philippine Ebony (usually used for Katana Koshirae). 1300lbs with all hardware installed. Very hard to work with.
Picture is more than a year old now (maybe two). A server rack with recording system and batteries is to the right now, where the DVD shelves were in this picture.

My tools were the same except I had a jig saw for the curve and an iron to apply the laminate to the edges :D
Flexibility is always good to have in a build. Im an old fart and know this is what I wanted so I wont be changing it much in the future.
After a few years in this I KNEW what I needed in a desk.

What's the big controller beneath the center monitor?
-
It's the RailDriver Train Cab Controller.

I bought it to keep my nephews happy when they come to visit, but they like war games just like I do.
I have a ShipDriver Watercraft Controller also.

You are nearly 100% mistaken in your post. The only thing you got right was the modeling project, but your eyes must be failing you or you didn't get a good look. The infantry guy started out at just 2,500 polygons, but eventually became a multi-million polygon model. My work is not intended for games.

Thanks, vDALLAS is staying with me for a while now that he's back from living in Europe if you can believe it and if I can talk him into getting his computer out of storage in Illinois I'll be stretching it to a little over 10 feet with my 2 leftover sticks of strut and another top piece.
