Title: Road Trip - Central Europe
Post by: GScholz on September 18, 2016, 03:01:16 PM
OK, so some friends and I met up in Austria this summer for like a reunion. Two buddies and myself decided to make a road trip out of it, driving down through Sweden, Denmark and Germany. On the return trip we also drove through the Czech Republic. So, six countries and close to 5,000 miles. On the way we visited the Type VII u-boat U-995 at the Laboe Naval Memorial, The German Tank Museum in Munster, Dachau concentration camp, BMW Welt in Munich, Luftwaffenmuseum Flugplatz Berlin-Gatow, Castle Hohenwerfen south of Salzburg in Austria (cast as "Schloss Adler" in Where Eagles Dare) and many other interesting places.

For the trip I bought an (another) old BMW 5-series as a project car... I cleaned it up, fixed it, painted it matte-black on black with red pinstriping, and decorated it with skulls and other appropriate artifacts. Vikings need a proper longboat when doing Europe... I named it "Roadkill" since it was a fair chance it would break down and we'd have to ditch it and take the train the rest of the way. However, it defied its name and made it all the way there and back again, and collected many other names along the way: The Black on Black, Das Böses Auto, Bösemobil, and The Grim Beemer, among others.

I had a dashcam running for safety reasons, and one of my buddies also ran some cameras during the voyage. So with all the gigabytes of video available I decided to make a sort of "dashcam diaries" of the whole road trip. Episodes will be published irregularly in this thread for those who's interested in watching what a road trip in Europe looks like... With silly foreigners speaking silly foreign languages with the occasional English word or sentence thrown in seemingly at random.

I'm hosting the videos on Vimeo. Click on the Vimeo button if you want to watch in fullscreen and HD.

At the end of Ep 2 we stopped at La Pizza in Helsingborg. Award-winning little family-run pizza place. Great food.  We sought it out when driving through Helsingborg on our way towards Denmark. The car parked in front of us had Italian plates. We took that as a good sign. :cheers:

this thread for those who's interested in watching what a road trip in Europe looks like

So I learned:

Sweden has some very fine highways;
Sweden does not have many people to drive on those highways;
Scholz' muscle car got passed by a lady-car;
Scholtz has TrackIR, useful for sightseeing;
The rumors of the plentitude of Swedish hot blondes may be exaggerated;
I would have watched the rest of Episode 2, but I could no longer tolerate that dreadful music.

Thanks for posting this, Scholtz, an interesting project, and you've plainly put a lot of effort into making the videos.

Got to work with a bunch of dudes from Czech Republic in Afghanistan. They're some awesome people. I hope to visit one day and drink a great many beers while there.

Scholz' muscle car got passed by a lady-car;

In Ep 3 I get passed by an RV...  :rofl   It's a road trip... If we were trying to get there as fast as possible we would have taken a flight.

Hey, you can always turn the music down, or play some of your own.

Yeah I like the Czech, but not their road network. Some of the most dangerous roads in Europe. The day we drove through the republic we spent over 3 hours waiting for the highway to clear after a series of deadly accidents...  :uhoh

IRS kit on a possible 32 Ford.  Most of those are so clean, with the disc brakes opposite the rear differential.   Whether from Heidt's, Kugel or others.

Thank you for sharing Scholz.  :rock

Episode 3 is up. This time we make our way into Germany via the Öresund-connection between Sweden and Denmark. Literally driving across (and under) the Baltic sea.

In episode 4 we visit the museum u-boat U-995 at the Laboe Naval Memorial just north of Kiel, Germany. This u-boat has a special history; it served in the Kriegsmarine from 1943 to the end of the war in Europe. She completed nine patrols and participated in five wolfpacks. When the war ended she was surrendered in Trondheim, Norway and became on of three Type VIIC u-boats to serve in the Norwegain navy as the K-class. KNM "Kaura" served until she was decommissioned in 1965. She then was offered to the German government for the ceremonial price of one Deutsche Mark. The offer was turned down; but the Boat was saved by the German Navy League. She became a museum ship at Laboe Naval Memorial in October 1971.
