Everything in Bass Pro is extremely overpriced.  I like how people put on their hunting clothes to go shop in Bass Pro also.

This is hilarious actually, I used to work at a sporting goods store and had a theory that people would "dress up" to go there. One time these two guys came in decked out in waterfowl camo, about 2 months before the season started. Stuff like this happened all the time, and I'm glad someone has the same thoughts as me!

It is, but I do prefer their stuff to Cabelas.  Their pro qualifier baitcast reel is about as good of a deal as you can get.  The thing is solid, and goes on sale frequently.  There's also a few models of stuff that is exclusive to BPS (kvd rattling 1.5 sb, for example - you can get the silent version elsewhere, but you've got to go to BPS for the rattler).

I used to work at Cabels in Wichita.  See it all the time.

I have a Cabelas about 45mins from me.....  I ideally buy my guns from the gunshop I use to work at...I'm more of a support the small family business type. Not to say I haven't bought stuff at cabelas, I bought a J.Rigby Rifle in 375 H&H and one in 416 Rigby from the gun library At the store near me. The guy that runs it is a rifle collector like me, and really knows his stuff.

I've never been in a Bass Pro....do they have a section of the store that they sell high end guns in?

Its been in the works for 2 years...I don't see one going in in Bethlehem. The folks that run that town cant agree what color the sky is, let alone anything of this magnitude   :D

That stinks. I've always thought Cabelas had a better "black gun" offerings.

Bass Pro has always had better fishing gear though.

If they buy them out and keep them separate it should be fine.

Don't roll them into one ugly cousin-luvin creation... Keep'em separate, share product lines, we all win.  Only been to one Bass pro shop in Calgary, otherwise, it's Cabelas for this prairie boy.

It's my understanding that this is the plan!  I have a friend who works a cabelas and he was told that BP was planning on keeping both separate, some stores may close but otherwise it will be business as usual.

Feds may not allow the merger according to a report today. I don't see how they can stop it as it is 2 retailers of recreational products. not like it is medicine or something.

because they can corner the market and raise prices.  you think if wall mart was the only retailer that it would sell their crappy clothes at low prices?

Well, I mean you basically have 2 out of 3 or so of the main stores for this kind of thing merging. I could see the feds taking issue with that.

Plenty of stores still offer sporting goods of this type. Walmart, Fred Meyer, Bimart (local region) are some of the bigger operations, but plenty of smaller stores still around, and no laws regulating starting a new chain. I don't see it as a bad thing. Worst case they raise prices then other operators open and offer the same stuff for less. Best case they reduce prices because of more buying power.

68valu the thing is that they can do like wallmart does.  offer lower prices till the local competition is gone.  once there's no competition what stops them from offering higher prices?

I don't care what happens to Cabelas or Bass Pro as long as they leave REI alone.

if that happens then somebody will open up competition for less money. That is how capitalism works. There will always be an entity looking for a way to make a buck. Most of the stuff being sold by cabelas is made in China now and the chinese will always sell their stuff to anyone willing to buy it. That sucks for American industry, but until we as americans are more competitive industry wise that is just the way it is going to be. You can get on Alibaba and contact chinese manufacturers directly and get wholesale pricing on bulk purchases as long as you have the cash.

They just opened a Bass Pro shop up here in Canada near where I live, haven't been there yet. The Cabelas up here are all tiny compared to the ones I have seen in Texas. Like a quarter the size.

Gander mountain's prices are stupid expensive.

Funny you say that, they just opened one somewhat near to me and I took a walk inside...their firearm prices are fairly competitive. They are only making (on average) $40/$50 on new guns. (I have access to dealer and buying group costs) but their misc sundries on the other hand were expensive.
