Title: Shorts Sunderland, Float Zekes, etc.
Post by: Vraciu on October 11, 2016, 05:09:38 PM
Why not seaplanes at ports?

Man I bet the Sunderland would be a hoot to fight against.

Oh, and the Emily.

Short Sunderland.  Typo.

I'd rather have the Short Sutherland than the PBY for the only reason that the Short Sutherland would be more survivable in a MA environment than the PBY-5/5A due to its greater number of defensive guns and sturdier construction.

The H8K Model 12 "Emily" would also be cool to see added to the game, with its defensive armament (5x 20mm cannons and 5x .303 mg) and bomb load (4k bombs or 2x torpedoes) it would see use in the MA.  However, the H8K only saw service in limited numbers, with only 167 produced and the Model 12 being the most produced version (112).

In addition to the "Rufe" (A6M2-N) for port defense, it would be nice to also have the N1K1 "Rex" float plane as the 2nd plane for port defense.  However, like the H8K Model 12, the Rex was only produced in small numbers (100) and saw limited action in the later part of the island campaigns before being recalled to the Japanese homeland to be used as part of the aerial defense against increased US bombing.

+1.   It'd be very cool to see them in the arena, watch them take off and land in water, and fly them around.

agree with oboe any sea plane that can take off and land at ports would add alot of  :airplane:.

Plus it will give the storch bailers something to work with instead of walking on water with a .45 trying to cap some troops.

PBY would be cool to have the ability to highlight an enemy cv on the map for your team providing your constantly in visual contact with it.

It would also be cool if the radar icon disappears when landed in the water.

For as beautiful as the A6M2-N Rufe is, and I think its the best looking floatplane from the War, I'm just not sure it'd see much use in the MA unless it had some sort of special observation ability like the Storch does.   It was used to provide observation and support for amphibious landings, and as a point-defense interceptor for remote locations.   We really don't have remote locations in the MA - everything is reachable within a few minutes of flying from a coastal field or CV.   And for ground support it only carries a couple 100 lb bombs, and has two wing-mounted 20mms and a couple of cowl-mounted small caliber MGs.

Apparently it did battle with P-40s and P-38s in the Solomons and the Aleutians though.   But I don't think it would be a match for much in the MA.

Really cool plane for a test bed for coding water take offs and landings though, and if it could observe GVs like the Storch it might be useful.   Might be neat to have small seaplane/limited-GV bases on maps at river mouths or on the shores of lakes, remote from other bases.

I don't see a reason to bring up the low production numbers of the Emily and Rex.  The Ta-152 had around 50(?) built, and we have her in-game. :headscratch:

My namesake downed a Rufe in his F6F during a four-victory mission (it was actually five, but he gave one credit to his wingman).

+1 for float planes and flying boats at ports (and airfields, if they have wheels like the PBY). The Rufe would be a good addition to port defenses. Yes, I know it won't handle like a Zeke, but it was still pretty fast and nimble (for a float plane), and I'm pretty certain it will get used, if for port defense if nothing else. Besides, an new a/c is welcome, in my opinion. :airplane:

float planes would be cool to use from ports only since they all have a storch hanger

but they would have to fix the ditching on water problem-if you die ditching on water-you won't be able to land a seaplane on it as well.
