Title: Ukraine Medicine
Post by: hitech on October 26, 2016, 04:15:33 PM
I always knew health care was not the worlds greatest in Ukraine, but I never thought this was possible.

About 2-3 years ago my Father In law (Age 60) was complaining of rectal bleeding. Of course like many people he does not see the doctor until early this year. Yes he has colon cancer, they radiate for 5 days, then operate.

After which he goes home and they say he should be fine.

He never felt very good after the operation, and 2 months ago we convinced him to go back in to find out whats up. At This point he can not poo, has fever and lost lots of weight (think holocaust). The stick a finger up, take an Xray and tell him he is fine. A week ago they finally take blood and tell him he is anemic and give him something to self inject.

So we finally talk him in to coming back to the US, was here 3 years ago with green card. This past Wednesday 10/19/2016 he arrives and does not look good, my wife takes him to emergency Thursday morning, at 1:00 AM Friday he has a colostomy. After CT scan and sonogram he obviously still has a large tumor.

As things progress the oncologist tells us if would be very helpful if we find out what the previous operation did, and what radiation treatments were performed.

Yesterday after MRI the tumor has not spread to any glands, but is pushing against his Pelvic wall , bladder and prostate.

This morning my Brother in law goes to the hospitable to get records. The doctor tells him that when they opened Victor up, they saw the large tumor decided they could not do anything and closed him back up.
Told him he was fine and sent him home.

So since March he has been thinking he should be getting better, and even after many visits the doctor kept telling him he was fine.

That's a messed up situation, man. It sounds like he's in better hands now, so hopefully he can get some legit treatment.

Socialist medicine... He wasn't worth saving in a socialist society. Of course they couldn't say that to him because then he might have gotten mad...

Sorry if this is rule 14 territory...

There was relatively good+- system during Soviet era, after collapse due to shortages it is in horrible state. Only private medecine provides somewhat reasonable care.

In any case, good health to your family!

In the UK is a lottery if you come out worse than you went in.

Friend of mine went in for his test results for a camera down his threat he never had.

Someone I know went to India for a full set of teeth that should have cost £20k and got them for done for £2000.

Are you a doctor Artik?

Well done boss for getting on top of a bad situation..
It always pays to analyse what is being told you and question it hard I have found.
Wishing him well in his treatment and recovery.

He is too young to be treated so shabbily, and I'm glad he agreed to let you intervene.
I'm also hoping for the best possible outcome for him.  :pray

That is grim.

I agree with GScholz.

I worked with several former Soviets.  Their stories of healthcare were also grim.

Sound awful that they would mislead like that.

My grandfather was stage 4 colon cancer.  A separate surgery found it not his regular check ups.  He went in for surgery and was gone in two days.  Whatever they did, it was not something his body could recover from.  I wonder how long he would have lived with out the surgery.

That is pretty shocking, Ukraine isn't a 3rd world country the Doctoring should be of a higher standard than that.

Dear lord...

He's in our prayers. But it blows my mind they wouldn't at least tell him that it was inoperable...

Technically speaking your healthcare system in Norway is somewhat socialist, like NZ's, and probably fairly decent.

I think you're confusing socialist healthcare with a country that is broke.

The healthcare system in Norway is not somewhat socialist, it is completely socialist. "I'm sorry but this medicine is too expensive." - "I'm sorry but this operation is too expensive". We're just red numbers on some bureaucrat's ledger and the waiting time for operations, or even diagnosis is measured in months. Private healthcare alternatives are largely outlawed, so some desperate people sell their belongings to finance treatment abroad.

We have Doctors here not much better. If you have a Doctor not helping you dont stay under his "spell". Go find another who can. Honestly I often think Doctors are more dangerous then the illness with the incompetents Ive seen in my life.

Sorry for his problems HiTech  :(
Before the strokes I installed and serviced many an oncology
MRI and CT. From what I recall, radiation treatment and
chemo treatment are rarely effective (but not ineffective).
I told my Neuro, Card and Family Docs, to shoot me up with
morphine and send me home should I ever get a disease that cannot be 100%
cured. I figure there is no point in draining or savings for a "maybe" good outcome  :aok
But that is just me... I would not suggest it for anyone else

Hey now!!!   That's my idea..... :furious :furious :furious

But then I dont have to ask as they already give me large amounts of Morphine.....

Sorry to read this Dale,we have social medicine here but it's top notch. Both my wife and I have been dealing with the big C and we are thankful we have good nearby Hospitals and Doctors.

Funny thing is my Doc is Latvian,so he knows how bad it could be and does his best to be sure we are both treated with the best care possible. Colon cancer can be a real pain in the... if you're over 50 be sure to be checked,if caught early there's good success,if left too long well it's not something anyone would want to go through!

Sorry to hear that!
Poor countries, corruption same in Romania; in 2007 i had to buy blood for transfusions, anesthetics and pay the doctors to operate my mother , was too late anyway. If you have $$ live longer, i read about David Rockefeller at 101 yo, received 7th hearth transplant.

Sorry Morfiend but a friend of mine had a step father with colon cancer  :(
He went through their treatment for 6 mos-1 yr but MRI and CT showed the treatment was not effecting
it  :furious
He opted to do what I am going to do and went on hospice and morphine
At the end, he was constantly pushing the button to feed him more morphine  :bhead
That is why I will not put my wife through the same thing !
Besides, the best way determine colon cancer is the colo-rectal exam which, never mind you
know  :D
I don't know if you realize this but all syphinter [sic] muscles are designed to be an exit... not an entrance  :lol

No worries Ram!  It wasnt me with the colon cancer it is my wife! Unfortunately she is allergic to morphine but I'm not.... :D

I have a chronic pain condition and they opted to treat it with morphine, after they tried just about everything else!  Been on it since 95,it hasnt been all fun and games, side effects can be rough but it's made a huge difference in my life!!!

Told the wife your exit joke........she just gave me that look, you know the one....... :rofl :rofl :rofl
