This news article says a Russian fighter escorting a Russian "spyplane" flew within a half a mile of an American aircraft.  Unless the American aircraft was a heavily loaded cargo plane, it seems that the U.S. plane could have simply avoided the turbulence.

I wasn't aware that American aircraft were welcome in Syrian airspace?
