Title: Modern Stick comparable to MS Sidewinder?
Post by: cav58d on November 04, 2016, 06:05:50 PM
After a decade + hiatus, I am considering a return to AH!  "Back in the day" I was using a MS Sidewind joystick.  Absolutely loved it.  I could careless about dozens of macros, and the stick just felt right.  When it broke I had switched to the Saitek (sp) x52, and I never felt comfortable with it.  It's been so long that I can't remember in full detail, but I wasn't thrilled with having a split stick/throttle combo.  I also felt the stick's overall length was longer then my preference?

So i'm looking to see if there are any present day sticks similar to the old sidewinder, that are user friendly and comparable in size and feel?

Thanks so much!

I used a very old Saitek Cyborg Graphite for a few years, that my older brother had for years but never really used. I thought it was the best stick in the world until some internal parts went bad. I think there are still a few on ebay/amazon for around 20 bucks plus shipping. I think at that price, it's really not a bad stick.

I've heard many former Sidewinder users being very happy with a Thrustmaster T.16000M. I have one myself but I can't tell how it compares with the SW since I've never had one.

Looks decent.  That slider/throttle though...I'm sure i'd get used to it, but the action seems so foreign versus having a traditional type tab to flip forward and back.

I use a 16000M and I it is a very good stick. The best feature is the very smooth and precise action. The throttle slider is easy to adapt to, as it designed to be used by the thumb on your free hand. My biggest gripe is that the hat switch has a smooth surface and is difficult to operate properly because there is no grip. I solved this by placing a small piece of masking tape over the hat for a grippier surface.

Actually they now make a Hotas version of it, too. I use mine combined with the throttle of my previous stick, a TopGun Afterburner II.

Exactly. It even says "TM" after the name on the stick. I've had it for quite a long time now, about a decade or so. I suppose most people know the stick under its current name, T.Flight Hotas X.

Nostalgia. Or ergonomics.

Have you ever had one or used one?  If not, don't jump to conclusions: it was a very good stick.  Mine still is despite many switch replacements.
