I've updated my 2009 72 SAP I-16 skin with the latest AH3 effects. The new normal map works well to highlight the fabric covered areas of the airframe.

Greebo,
I love your ability to work with details in many areas of your skins. You definitely make a plane look good. I find, however, the over-representation of the wing ribbing detail to be a bit heavy. These weren't nearly so evident. Even though the material may be described as fabric-covered, it wasn't the same as we see on WW1 biplanes. It was much more subtle.
This is more a comment on the choice of aesthetics. I think you've crafted them nicely, but that it doesn't quite reflect history. I'm guilty of this myself at times.
I offer an example of a front-line fighter:

You can see hints of the shape on the stabilizer, though not enough to distort the paint. The wings are almost unnoticable. Here's a restored warbird highlighting the details with sunlight. They are visible, but much more toned down.

Might I encourage that they be toned down in the future?
Otherwise, it looks very fetching.

I agree with Krusty.
Also, from working on some new 109's, I'm finding that what looks good in exterior shots looks bad from inside the cockpit. What do you think of the effects on your i-16 from the pilot's seat Greebo?

Thanks for the feedback. The fabric sag looks more extreme than it normally does because I set up the screenshots so that the sun's angle emphasised the effect. The cockpit screenshot below is taken looking towards the sun, which again is the angle which shows the effect up most. I don't think it is overpowering, but I'll turn the effect down anyway.

Very nice, Greebo. Haven't been a fan of the Rata but your handiwork and HTC's model look impeccable.
Interested to see in the RL color photo of the restored bird, how much sun-glare there is even on flat paint. Especially on the leading edge of the aileron, where I always try to show a shadow gap. Very interesting.

I have increased the specularity of this skin since I took those screenshots, but not to the level of the warbird photo. You have to be a bit wary of using current warbirds for research on skins. They often use glossier than original paint on them simply because its a lot easier to keep clean. The WW2 photo is pretty glossy too but most photos show less of a shine than that.

What does it say on the side? there was a profile I saw that said "death to fascists", that would be a great skin.
Great work.

As I recall the slogan on the left says "For Stalin" and the one on the right was something inspiring about Communism.

Any chance you can get Waffle to eliminate the flaperons which were replaced by split flaps with Type10. He combined both flap types on that airframe which is an insta crash if you drop them. The split flaps need to extend to the root of the ailerons. Years ago I posted this up in the wish list with historic photos and pages from the airframe manual. The type6 was the last airframe with flaperons and that was only in the Spanish Civil war with the Type10 introduced at the very end. The VVS entered ww2 with Type12 and updates up to Type30 by 41-42 and split flaps the whole way.
By the way, rata (rat) was a Spanish civil war name while the VVS called it the osyol or donkey.

Deleting the flaperons is more of a flight model change than a shape or art change and I have no more influence than any other player when it comes to that sort of request. I'd have though HT would be the best person to ask regarding that.
Thanks for the info on the nickname, although I'd have probably not gone with "Revised donkey" for the thread title even if I'd known that. :)

It says: "Let's die by the millions - Communism FTW!" :D
