Title: Affordable Laptop for AH3?
Post by: Vraciu on November 07, 2016, 10:01:16 AM
Was looking at Office Depot laptops the other day.  Some ar getting pretty cheap but can they run AH3?

What should I be looking for, hardware-wise?

You should be looking for a gaming level video card by either AMD/Radeon or Nvidia/GeForce, with at least 1 GB dedicated video RAM and of course from the highest third of each series. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units#Comparison_table:_Mobile_GPUs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units#Comparison_table:_Mobile_GPUs) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units#Comparison_table:_Mobile_GPUs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units#Comparison_table:_Mobile_GPUs)

Since it's Office Depot, you may not find those. Fury and Quadro are for CAD, not gaming.

AMD is getting back into GPUs for laptops shortly apparently, but for now pretty much all of them are nVidia.

Asus and MSI make the more common non custom gaming laptops.  Sager and others are around too, but for "affordable" a 1060 or 1070 Asus/MSI 15 or 17" is pretty much the most common options out there.  $1500 will get you into the 1060 with a newer CPU and 17" LCD, or if you don't mind 970M you can get into those under 1000$ easily now.

Also, recent tests have said that the 1050ti laptop card is faster than the 970M, so that's an option maybe.

Not if you want a gaming capable GPU for games out these days, unless you want to go used.  Might be some 880 or possibly even 960/970 used laptops around, but from what I've seen people selling used laptops seem to think they are far more valuable than desktops, and overprice them in the various used areas online.

Not a recommendation, but this is about the cheapest one I could find.
