Skuzzzy and/or knowledgable others.
I have available a core2 duo machine with 4gb ram. I have a older P4 3.06GHz system as well. Software called Router OS can be installed on a x86 ready hardware. Add some lan pci adapters into mobo and a router can be born........................
RB2011 from Mikrotik. Assuming I set up the DIY pc router properly, would it perform better/worse than the 2011, or are they equivalent?

I can't say anything about the software, but keep in mind that either of those PCs are going to draw a hugely larger amount of power.
If you care at all about your electric bill or 'your footprint', then ask for a better solution running off a low voltage power brick.
I wish I could remember, but a month after I bought one of the early dual channel wifi routers, one of the major commercial router vendors decided to offer a couple of consumer versions in $200-$300 price range. Orical?
Maybe Skuzzy knows who might be doing that.

Should be fine, if you get all the hardware sorted out. I would look at booting it from a flash drive and get rid of the hard drives.
It will draw more power than the RB2011.

i used to set up a old PC with 2 nic cards and a Switch and use the share internet feature built into windows, worked better then any router or software i ever used, i would do things that would lag out the connection on a normal router and this setup was the only way it wouldn't lag out.

I have an SSD available, I just need to buy adapters...........
I just hate to leave the old hardware to rust, seems as if the 2011 is basically a pc with an OS.......but for future I would want something that draws less power and the 2011 is pretty cheap really............

It is a little more than just a PC. It also has a hardware switch in it.
