Title: Other VR flight sims?
Post by: TEShaw on November 27, 2016, 09:55:03 AM

OK.  Your Occulus enthusiasm is convincing; I just ordered a new Rift.  With the new AH3 effects & sky & terrain, I'm sure it'll be astounding.  Look for me in the WWI arena!  Now I'll have to post a Wish List topic for more WWI airplanes.

Please tell me about any other VR flight sims you would recommend.

I'm more interested flying experience and effects rather than multi-player combat.

Thank you.

Regards,

Airman T. E. Shaw

(PS Would AH support a second Thrustmaster throttle as a keyboard input?  I guess I recall there are other specific devices dedicated to hotas keyboard: I just happen to have and old throttle laying around.)

Yo, TEShaw!   :salute

IMHO, X-Plane does a pretty fair flight simulation. FlyInSide, a third-party app, puts Rift support into X-Plane 10.x

I sometimes fly a virtual Sequoia F.8L Falco in X-Plane with my TrackIR...

AH should have no problem with seeing and recognizing a 2ND throttle...

You just need to go in and apply the setting, the way you want it to work.....if you only going to use it for commands, don't assign any of the AXIS inputs

Hope this helps

DCS World is good and it's free with the SU-25T and TF-51D.

Aces High will support the maximum number of input devices DirectInput allows, which I believe is 255.

Any comments on FSX-STEAM?

Any comments on FSX-STEAM?

You need to get the flyinside addon - it enables VR support for FSX... but it's a pretty stunning product. If you get a leap motion it can do hand recognition, and you can use your hands to turn stuff on and off. Probably one of the coolest things I've seen in VR.

that sounds pretty cool.

I think there will be a lot of amazing things coming up in the fairly near future.

RoF seems to be using vorpx, and apparently looks a bit arse.

For a rather liberal definition of 'flight' (space and non atmospheric planets): Elite:Dangerous is said to be an extremely faszinating VR experience.

AH3 is the best VR game out there for flight sims IMO, I've tried all of them a fair bit, and that's my opinion.  A few others are decent as well.

I would recommend getting the free Project Cars game, they have it on Steam and it features just a couple cars/tracks from their full game, and it works very well with the Rift to give you a good idea of what driving sims are like.  Roaring up and down steep turns/tracks, it's pretty incredible.

Thanks for the exciting info, folks.

I received my Oculus Rift yesterday....  and went off-line and Oh MAN!  Well, I say 'Oh man!' regarding Aces High;  I'm lucky I stumbled onto using the AH3 11.exe, where it was kind enough to ask me if I wanted to use my Oculus rig.

Did I miss the 'readme' file somewhere?  I'm unable to find a tech thread or FAQ here.  If there is one, please point me to it; if there isn't, well, there ought to be.

For instance, can you map that Rift focal point to a button or keyboard? (For now, I have that Rift hand-gizmo hung from around my neck on a gold chain with an open collar.  Which will also be very fashionable when I go to the disco -it impresses a certain type.)

What are the optimum settings for stuff like frame rate or anti-aliasing?  etc?

Thanks again.

(PS  Over last night I was downloading X Plane 11 and 10.  They're selling 11 from their website; but, since it's still in beta, they're throwing in the 10 version for free...all this for the same price Amazon is asking for X Plane 10.)

Set a button to Tracker Center in AH, that will center the Rift.

Visual quality settings that give you 90 FPS are recommended but it's still smooth at lower frame rates.

Try the view hat or a button for rear views.
