Title: Psu broke
Post by: zack1234 on December 06, 2016, 03:39:59 PM
For the last couple of weeks went I have pressed the on button my PC it has taken one or two presses, now it's just clicking when I press and PC will not turn on :frown:

It's a 4 year old corsair AX860i psu.

Does this point to the psu be broke?

And is 4 years usual on this type of psu?

Sounds like the switch is broke or a wire came lose, I guess the psu could be bad too. A little trouble shooting can go a long way in figuring out what the issue is.

That power supply is made by Flextronics.  They make decent supplies.  I think 4 years is a bit short for the life of the supply, but it all goes to the load it has been running under.

You baked too many pies in it and broked it

Anyways when you press the button does anything come on and off for a split second? If not then open the case up, there should be two wires that go to the motherboard thats labeled "switch" or something like that. If you cut the wires and short them together, that would bypass the switch and make the pc come on

If that was always lit whether the computer was turned on or not, then the power supply may of gone out

Was the led on the PSU lit all of the time or only when the computer was switched on? In the former case it sounds like the PSU, in the latter it can also be the switch or cable.

Meatwad has a point in shortcutting the power button wires, but instead of cutting them simply unplug them and shortcut the relevant pins with some narrow piece of metal like a small screwdriver. If the computer starts working it's the switch.

A rare but documentedly possible reason for a non booting system is that the PSU fan has got stuck between two magnets. Making it spin with a pick or even compressed air will cure that.

Something that has occurred only lately is that if your coin cell type BIOS battery has drained it can prevent the computer from booting. Shouldn't be too expensive to change it just for sure...

If it is broke, let's hope it went down quietly and did not take any other parts of the computer with it.  Good luck zack.

Zack,

Just take some coin from under your bed and buy a new and better computer, then you can fix the old one and you'll have 2 computers at the cost of some coin from under the bed!

Or you could sell that knock off Vespa you ride and buy both a new comp and a bottle of bourbon!

I got a new PSU,comp still didnt fire up,had the MB checked and it was bad,got a new MB and moved all the parts over only to find the cpu was dead too!

I hope you dont have the same issues! If so well a day at my brothel might help!   Bring lots of coin!!
