Thanks to Lyric1 for finding me the info for this skin.
This F4U-1A named Brat III was the aircraft of Captain Dean S. Hartley of VMF-225 based on the island of Guam in August 1944.

Looks fantastic, Greebo. Might be the nicest tri-color I've seen yet. Interesting that the kill flags and name are painted on the starboard side.
Have you fully transitioned to having all the shadow and glare highlights handled by the spec and normal maps, i.e. no longer using "canned" lighting effects in the diffuse map as we did in previous AH versions? I'm not sure whether to leave them in my diffuse map while adding them to the spec and normal maps to augment the effect, I'm trying for, or to remove them completely from the diffuse map.
In some sense, I think of the diffuse map as the "master" with ALL the layers, and we activate and manipulate the layers as necessary in the supporting map files to achieve the effects we desire.

There is a plastic kit decal sheet that shows the name and kill markings on both sides. However the photo I have of this aircraft shows the RH side, as do the other VMF-225 Corsair photos I have found. So as I wasn't able to confirm kill and art markings on both sides I just painted them on the right.
Rather than get rid of the 3D lighting effects completely on the diffuse file for the most part I just reduce them to a low enough level that the normal file overpowers them. That way anyone who has the effects turned off in the game can still see something that is not entirely flat looking.

Having the art on the RH side works better in the hangar anyway, since the hangar view in AH3 shows the RH side instead of the LH as it was in AH2.
Seems like a good idea to handle the lighting effects as you are doing.
