Anyone else getting this bug?
When I look at airplanes I get a black screen. If I choose a shrub or a tree I get an outline but nothing of use.
Any thoughts?
-
I moved this to the support forum as you seem to be the only one having this issue.
Multiple skinners are using the utility without this problem.
I need to see the skin files you are using .
Did you try just copying the default skin to an empty directory (i.e. p51d_1) and see what happens when you view it? Do you have an (*.res) resource file for that skin already?

No problem. JUST MY LUCK that it's only me! :P

I have all the default files. I basically have every .res file in the game that's been released.
When I was using the BETA it worked just fine. I can't determine if the issue is because of my new video card or the released AH version as the problem started around the time I changed both.
-
Here's my directory list for p51d_1.
-
Skuzzy,
Would it do me any good to delete the AHSKVIEW.EXE and reinstall it?
-
Again, what happens if you dump the default skin for the P51D, then copy those files to p51d_1 AND remove the p51d_1.res file?

I've done that. Same result.
I wiped Windows 7. Did a full reinstall of both Win and AH3. I get the black screen in the Viewer where the object should be. If I move the slider at the bottom to the left the view box turns blue. Back to the right it goes black.
Cockpit view shows a black horizontal rectangle.
:headscratch:
-
How about a DXDIAG output?
-
Are you running the skin viewer in the default game folder or have you moved it?
If you want, send me your skin files and I'll see if they work on my PC.
-
That was my next suggestion.
But if he installed the default dump of a skin, it should have no trouble with the viewer, unless the executable got moved to the desktop, from its default location while trying to create a shortcut.

I can try it but the default doesn't work either.
Skuzzy, I will send you a dxdiag shortly. I am away from the machine. Will do it when I get back.
I also tried changing (reducing) video settings in-game. Does the viewer still use those or does it have its own?
-
It uses the game settings.
-
It uses the game settings.
Okay. So reducing the texture size didn't help. Turning off all effects didn't either. :/
Dxdiag next...

Have you installed the motherboard drivers? The "standard" system device drivers dating from 2009-2010 made me wonder... The latest drivers are available at Lenovo's site, http://support.lenovo.com (http://support.lenovo.com).
-
Still scratching my head as to what could be the issue.
Hmmmm. In the games "Video Settings", what video card is shown to be used? This is really a stretch.

It ran before with those drivers. I am trying to update them at Lenovo. Feels like a Win7 update... Waiting...waiting...

Shows my card. This is weird. It was working fine under Beta. This video card is better than the one I was using then... :headscratch:
-
Can I bring this thing by the office and have you look at it? Lol
-
I doubt there is much I could do. None of this makes any sense. No one else is having this trouble.

Hitech gave me a computer virus. :noid
1) How many people with my card are even using the Viewer?
2) Is there a standalone installer for the Viewer?
3) Is there some sort of vid card setting that needs to be enabled or software?
I took some more screenshots. The only things I can see are shrubs and trees (not even the full object, just a shadowed outline).
There goes my skinning career I guess. Grrrrrrr.

Does DirectX do anything with the Viewer?
-
I asked this before but you didn't answer. Are you running the skin viewer in the default game folder or have you moved it?
-
The skin viewer is not a stand alone utility. It has to be run from the game installation folder as it depends on the same resources the game executable does.

I missed that one or forgot to respond, sorry. It is in the default folder. I have even opened that folder and clicked the executable directly just to be sure.
My default I believe is c://HiTechCreations/Aces High III but I will have to double check. I let it install where it wanted.

Does it access anything like DirectX? Maybe I have something screwed up elsewhere.
I just saw an NVidea hotfix. May have to give that a try. So frustrating. :bhead
-
It uses all the same computer resources as the game. DirectX is a big part of it.

Okay. Let me try fooling with DirectX.

I installed it again on a separate drive with the default folder. Same issue.
I am thinking it is my card. I am getting strange effects with skins in game, too. That card wasn't cheap. Grrrr.

Are any of these settings relevant, Skuzzy?
-
FIXED.
I tried a new vid driver and that didn't fix it, but a reinstall of the latest DirectX did the trick.
Thanks everyone for trying to help me out here. Hopefully nobody will have the same issue but if they do at least this is one possible fix. :salute :salute :salute :salute :salute :salute :salute

The game and all the utilities are designed to run with the video card settings at default.

Got it.
It was DirectX that was screwing up. It is working now. Thanks for the help. :salute
