I think in all this discussion, a fundamental point was missed. Do all squads follow their leaders this way? I am just saying: If the briefing for my squad went: Unforgiven, here's the mission: We are going to fly 2 sectors (IN THE WRONG DIRECTION) and then just land our bombers and tower out. My guys (even the DFA guys that fly with us) would have said (through a haze of smoke and alcohol vapors) "Yeah, uhhh No, Pliss. That is a stupid plan. We are not doing that. Fellas, fall in on me heading 135 (a squad joke) and type dot speed 185 in your text buffers." I am kinda of proud of that. Every Friday our Leaders have to LEAD us into combat. If they don't, we got about 30 guys who are willing to step up. That is also a warning to other CIC's. If you would have sent this mission to us, we would have interpreted it thusly: He meant Bombs on target by T-60. ~~~ Snake~~~

It is a privilege that these guys allow me to lead them. They follow because they choose to, not because they are told to.

Couldn't have said it better way.

There is no way I would've followed that order and said so in another thread. What's troubling is two squads participated in that fiasco.

I would have been on the other end of this situation if ever giving an order like that.

...and damn glad of it.

If you are given a BS assignment, you find some way to make it fun...be it suicide style fighter attack, or suicide style bombing run...or some other idea that will end your night in a blaze of glory...
Not avoid combat for sake of points...
I don't think I could order my guys to avoid combat...
I have a very hard time trying to keep them on task when we are after only bombers...sawzaw starts having fits and such when we see fighters and I tell them to leave them alone

I have flown in 1 fso and 2 or 3 scenarios as a axis squad and all we did for an hour was climb to 25-30k fly in circles burrowing holes in the sky. I don't know if it was a squad leader dicision or a cic problem but it seemed like this squad was being kept from engaging in combat...if I was to fly in scenarios or fso again it would be allies only..because it seems I can't fly fly german iron worth a crap

It was a CiC decision to have us as scouts. The biggest factor in scout selection is squad size. As a small squad, I usually get scout duty twice a month. It's easy for a CiC to tell a small squad to patrol a certain area and not worry about breaking up a larger squad to do the job that only requires a few guys. It blows to be sure - makes recruitment a impossible. Sucks having to tell you or the others "Come on back next week. It usually does not suck this bad."

LOL, I see what you did there. Had to read it several times. :rofl

Hang in there Devil. It will get better. You have a great start with your squad and it will grow and your tasks will improve. If I was not in JG11 I would be flying with your squad. I think you are doing a great job sir. :salute

I for one don't have a problem following orders. Just ask Devil but ordering me to fly around for 2 hours or so and land for the sake of points---- NOT!!!!! I'm sorry that's an order I can't follow, put me in front of the firing squad if I live and make it back!!!!! I'm gonna attack something!!! :devil :salute

(emphasis added)
I am all for scoring points and winning, but to keep planes out of contact is gaming the system.
Scoring should be legitimate.
Play the cards that were dealt.
Most importantly, have fun.
As for following orders or not, it adds to the immersion of the fog of war. Frame 3 had us as recon in defense. We took our D3A recon mission and ended up over the enemy base. A "reconnaissance in force."

about 70% of all my fso has been in crappy planes and I hated the missions. I always keep coming back as often as I can hoping to get in a better ride.
of all the crappy rides I probably died 99% of the time. but had I been given an order to circle and land, I would have just bailed right there and go watch tv.
but that's easy for me to say. I know some of those guys who did it and they are stand up guys. when given the order they probably looked at each other and said wtf. but never given an order like that before they followed it.
let's move on and learn from this.
