Here it is guys. Thanks for the help all. If it gets accepted fly it offline and let me know what you think.
(Devil I made the tweaks you suggested. Fingers crossed.)
I still don't quite have the Greebo/Devil/Oboe/etc. screenshot skills. Now my PRINT SCREEN is not working. It is pasting a white box instead of the airplane. Was working fine before. :headscratch:

Hopefully Greebo can give some more pointers on doing a bare metal finish. I think the metal looks like light gray paint under a gloss coat. The painted portions look very good though.
How is Ding Hao! coming along? That's the Pony I want to see. :aok

It looks about as metallic as anything out there I've seen. I am not sure what else I can do with it. I have definitely flown a lot of NMF planes trying to get a sense for how they do it... You're basically stuck with some form of gray. It's not easy that I can guarantee you. :bhead
At least the paint looks right, so that's progress, eh?
I think it looks pretty good when you fly it. It shines in all the right places.

It's released under 354FG. :)
(It was converted from AH2 so I need to update it. I will get there eventually. It actually survived the conversion okay and I was able to dump the default normal map for release this tour.)

Oh, I know all about trying to make a bare metal finish. They're difficult as hell. I had a bare metal Ki-84 in the works on my old HDD. Also, have a look at the underside of my 29 Sentai Ki-84. It's bare metal. But even then I could not quite get it to look right.
And Ding Hao! looks pretty sweet.

Thanks man. Fly it offline! :)
As usual I had a lot of help from all you guys on it.

Bare metal Mustangs were bare metal on the fuselage only. All Mustangs had painted wings. The entire plane is one shade though..

Yes, this is well known. But I don't think V was going for that look on his skin - as most pony skins in game did not either. He could easily replicate the silver lacquer that was used if he dulled the shine on those parts of the wing and "filled" the panel lines where needed.

Yeah, the problem is that if I dull down the shine then it doesn't reflect enough light at all anywhere and winds up looking like a gray blob.
Now, while Mustang wings came from the factory filled, puttied, sanded, and painted, some also had that stuff stripped off in the field. You can find plenty of pics with rivets showing, etc. etc. It's a super tough call. Everyone tells me my skins are too plain and undetailed when I duplicate the smooth upper wing, so I tried to split the middle on this one.
The wings SHOULD be less shiny than the fuselage. However, the image of this Mustang does show some reflection on the bare metal areas like the upper fuselage and the flaps. In the end I decided that it had to have SOME reflection or else it would just look like a gray-painted airplane.
The other issue is that getting it to look right inside the cockpit throws off the outside, and vice versa. I don't think there is a happy landing place.
SOME OF THIS is driven by the graphics engine. It has some bugs in it. Black things show up as gray in shadow... The environment map reflection modeling is a bit whacky... Normal mapping is still a challenge to master...
It's my best effort so far in NMF... I'll just keep working at it. Maybe I'll figure it out.

Underside?
Tough shot to take. I tried.

I can try that down the road after it gets approved if you think that's worth doing.

If it were me. I'd go for the silver lacquer with a medium shine, but leave the panel lines visible to make the wings a little more interesting.

Gotta do something as I can't crack into the AH Facebook page gallery. Not worthy! :uhoh :cry

I am curious how it looks on your end compared to my screenshots.
The thought occurred to me that I'm trying to make skins look right on me FE but that may not translate to others' FEs.
That skin is basically an auto-conversion by HTC from AH2...
Does it look on your end like my screenshot above does?
Trying to figure out some things here...
