Title: Option for Icon Scaling
Post by: Dobs on January 31, 2017, 02:00:54 PM
Take a look at this picture.... Tell me if you can see what is different about it than the standard picture you are used to seeing...

I scaled the icons by range from me....closest one F4U1A (bottom of picture) is bigger than the one at 2.5K which is bigger than the oe at 3.5K which is bigger than the one at 4.0K....and the smallest (left middle) is almost at icon limit.

I think this would add a little "depth perception" into the game via icon use...also cause you to look a little harder at the bandit 6K out to determine type vs the one at 600....

Make it an option for those who want it, and leave the default for those who don't?

Thoughts?

Thanks bowhunter...what storage sight is that?

It's through my groups website. It uses Amazon S3 for all the storage of the entire site.

My thought process on this is "how to get "depth perception" in a 2d world...and I think this would help. Especially if it is an option (that way everyone has the current, constant size or the scaled icons)....

The icons should be smaller or faded when farther away.
It will add some depth to the game.

To clarify, I'm more of a fan of the icon size changing by distance, not with the reduction of range they start to appear in the MA; not because I see it reducing combat (on the contrary it forces you to get CLOSER to bogies) but that is already a function of the arena setting and not necessary to produce the desired effect.

There are ways of compromising with the size changes to address concerns.

I don't see anything wrong with making an option to increase the icon size as the con gets closer. Might even come in handy when you're taking a quick peek behind you before taking your shot to see how much trouble you're in. Just make it an option, I like my tiny icons :)

Will the changing of the icon size effect render? I don't need anymore micro stutters in my gameplay

+1  I like the idea

...as long as it's an OPTION for players to choose or use the default.

That was the ideal vinkman...make it an option.

Size of icons at max range = <select font size>
Size of icons at min range = <Select font size>
Guys can select what they can read at max distance and then the computer can do the scaling between.

Not sure what all the post deletions were about...need to get back to daily visits! LOL!

I picked up on that in the OP. Just wanted to re-state it because it seemed to have gotten lost in the discussion.  :police:

Just to be clear...I'm not a fan of reducing icon range at all. Post was an attempt to add some "depth perception" to existing icons.

I missed the poo flinging contest, but to be clear....its just an attempt to help make it easier to judge "relative distance" easier.

I don't see dots outside of icon range....downside of flying in 4k..so believe me when I say please don't decrease the icon range!

Someone went off because he thinks every suggestion is an attack to the game....not a bad idea but my questions still stands, could this possibly create stutters while the game renders the scaling when you close in and pull away from a con.

I wouldn't think changing a text block would tax the GPU enough to cause a stutter.

One of the hardest things to get used to in AH3 is the lack of depth and distance cues. The constant size of the icon text makes everything very flat. Dobs suggestion to vary the text size according to distance would go a VERY long way in enhancing the perception of distance in the game.

Oh no I agree don't get me wrong but I'm worried more of connection.....what if a plane is closing fast but it's not rendering it properly because our connections aren't great???

Imagine GT101(known lagger) with this implemented....I don't know maybe im being paranoid of it.

Either way the icon is going to lag...in readout and in size (in this case)..if the person is playing with a high lag connect.

With guys from all over the world playing, a nice addition to the icon would be to shade the country symbol with colors to indicate connect.

Green <100 ms
Yellow 100-300ms
Red>300ms

Something along those lines...then you can see bad guy, red shaded symbol break/jink earlier than you think you need to!

And colors can be whatever works since most guys keep enemy as red, and friendly as green....just tossing examples out.

With VR becoming a "reality" in the game, I can't see our current icon system going unchanged much longer.  The immersion factor would be so much "bigger" without large billboards above the planes.

I like Dob's idea.  It will help those that have a tough time with judging E states by the icon ranges alone.

Personally, having cut my teeth on AW and WB, I am used to how the icon ranges are currently and can pretty accurately judge E states of other planes but I do know that some have troubles and this wish will help those players. This is a quality of life wish that is far more beneficial to the players without any real negatives.

I like icons to be just large enough to be readable, but not so large that they obscure the action.  So, constant icon size works for me.  But if "3D" icons were an option with no downside, no problem.

Like AKAK I think this is good....Maybe make it a second mode for icons(so people can pick a preference) between say standard(how it is now) and dynamic(like your suggestion)...think this will help with players like me who's more worried icons will jump in size and throw off my SA
