Title: where are the files after build?
Post by: NatCigg on February 09, 2017, 11:06:13 AM
I built a file with no errors (.res) and now i need to paste it to the aces high folder.  I can not find where the program put it.  I did a search and found what i though was the file and pasted it into the terrain folder.  the file name shows up ingame but loads a different terrain.

I wonder wheres the editors files at after the build?

Both your terrain project folder and the terrain res file belong in the ah3terr folder. Be sure to check for errors to have an idea what might be causing your problem but likely you just need to rebuild it and select it for offline play.

Your terrain project folder:

C:\Hitech Creations\Aces High III\ah3terr\[myterrain]

Your [myterrain].res file:

C:\Hitech Creations\Aces High III\ah3terr\[myterrain].res

Happy terrain building.

Yep, I wouldn't have thought of that one. Still, make sure you're using the latest TE. You might need to move your project folder but it will still work.

well, i copied sum stuff over, deleted the old .res, back to TE, checked and built the terrain.  i see the 40.4mb file is in the correct spot.  i close it down and open AH3, select my terrain, click ok, (here's the kicker) if i reclick select terrain i see the table has defaulted to craterma, any other terrain besides mine the selected terrain is still locked as the selection.  my terrain is being rejected at the click ok and i do not get a notification of error.  if i load offline practice after selecting my terrain i get crater ma.

Any thoughts on my problem?

If your directory stdshape has more than DAT0-DAT11 and an HDR file, you can delete everything in that folder or make a bak folder and move all those files to it. Then start up the TE, you will get a longer white screen while it generates new files in the stdshape folder. As soon as the terrain is fully open, run a build and try to get into that one offline.

I let that folder fill up with about 180 files once and my TE stopped opening the terrain. I deleted all of the files except of the most recent and it opened the terrain. Then Hitech informed me you can delete the full contents and the TE will regenerate them. He suggested for the final build run just before submitting a terrain to delete the contents of that directory, then run a build.

Thank you bustr.  I deleted the files in stdshape folder.  the only files in there were the ones you mentioned. after deleting and retrying , no luck.  im going to go read more.

The entire stdshape folder can be deleted and the TE will rebuild it.

I'm beginning to worry that you built the original terrain in the AH2 TE?

Can you post a list (or screenshot) of the files in your terrain folder?

ok so im lifted out of kcmx on my way to mount bohemia!  then 90 degree right turn to pictured rocks!.  capitals are Madison Lansing and Toronto! great lakes get sum!

p.s. i had the name of the terrain over 8 letters. i had 12, all lowercase, but 12.  i opened the old file, save as a 8 letter name. error check, build, load, play.

Thanks alll!! arteck, easy, bustr!

after a few hours of installing about 40 air fields and towns and repeated saves, i shut her down for a break.  when i came back the terrain editor crashes/stops responding and gets taken over by windows reporting.  my previous two builds, a test blank and my to many letters files open and work fine.  i then try my main file and it crashes the program.  i deleted some files that were in the stdshape that oddly had the previous long file name associated with them, i tried deleting a lot of files and running the program and ... crash.  interestingly i did see new folders in my terrain build folder, i deleted them, they were chconfig and... i think settings but i forget.  i wanted to attach my file but i cant seem to do that here, anymore.  :headscratch:  oh computer, why so difficult.   :bhead

Two choices, post a list of the folder and file names in here, or you can PM me and I'll try to walk you through it over the phone.

From what I can see here, all the necessary files are in place although it's surprising that your file extensions are not showing for some of the files.

What I really think is that you were using Crtl+S to save your terrain but that doesn't work.

If I'm right, you can toggle the base icons to see them (right click the Map window).

Based solely on the time stamps, it looks like you used artik's program, which is very good, but when you transferred from the original greatlakestl, maybe the htz elevation array and possibly the htz ground types didn't come over the way they are needed. Or like I suggested, they weren't saved.

Make a copy of your grtlkstl folder to protect your work, and then...

In the TE, try Importing the height.raw elevation file. You should see your elevations come back.
Then if you don't see the proper ground types, Import the splatetype.bmp file.

If all is well, save your work but not with Ctrl+S. Use the File Menu Save.

I re-read this:

chconfig would never end up in your terrain folder.

Worst case, run artik's program again with a valid terrain name and copy your oba file over. That should get you going again if you haven't pork the settings.

make sure your oba file is a text file. it looks kind of weird to me. that might cause a problem.

also the TE will only crash 3 times, then it will boot up, but will be missing whatever is causing the problem.

I moved the files elsewhere and started over.  I will try to follow the rules better next time.

When I was playing around with the files I noticed after a good crash it would generate the chconfig and settings folders in both terrain files greatlakestl and grtlkstl.  Something going on there.

The logo next to the Oba file came after I told windows the app associated with the file.

so.... i got to thinking about the logo next to the oba file.  i now click on it and it will try to open the terrain editor and the file.  i did this with my newest terrain, the pro gram crashed and created the chconfig folder and settings folder.  after closing the error report, i opened the terrain editor program, and my newest terrain opened fine.  im not sure if this is part of my grtlkstl.oba problem or not, but i now think the terrain editor does not like to be opened from a oba file that is linked to the terrain editor program.

it is not a question of dosn't like, the TE WILL NOT open an oba file by clicking on the file. In fact it sounds like it is launching the game.
