Title: Match Play - Highly Recommended
Post by: Oldman731 on February 28, 2017, 06:59:00 AM
With guidance from this group, I finally found my way into the match play arena.  Having played there a couple of nights, let me offer my opinion that this is the one of the very finest new features of AH3.  Beware, however, that you will find a very talented crowd there.  I don't think I've gotten a single kill, but the quality of the fights has been outstanding.  Good people, good sportsmanship, there is no down-side.

- oldman

"Yeah, I hear that, oldman, but I also heard that your opponents were not impressed with the quality of the fights they had with you."

"Bah.  Let them eat cake."

Match Play unlocks a huge potential for Aces High (Like E Sports potential) Still think the start distance needs to be further....5K just isn't enough.

Personally I think it's fine. What's your argument on increasing the difference? There isn't really any merges that you can't already do. I feel like making it farther apart will benefit the E players more with longer dive times to gain E. but this is all speculation.

Just a note: Diving does not gain you Energy , almost always you are looses Energy when diving. Diving does gain you speed (which is a completely different concept the energy).

Thank you for clarifying!  I am no expert in this field. Thanks for the arena :)

Diving benefits a player trying to create and angle more then it benefits a player trying to maintain E.

Vertical/horizontal separation....diving creates vertical separation which allows you to create a better angle behind the enemy 3-9 line with a vertical manuever which often times was misinterpreted when people explain that dive being to create Energy....you are trading alt for speed but both are relative when talking energy.

With 5K separation it doesn't allow the manuever space to help create angles because you have to burn a lot of energy in very tight manuevers to create angles...all an E fighter has to do is fly level toward you then start climbing at merge, that wouldn't change with extended distance for E fighters but with someone creating angles they don't have to be as aggressive which mantains their E a bit more. Shorter distance benefits the E fighter over the angle. Longer distance evens the playing field and creates a more dynamic fight situation.

Spek, who have you matched up against so far? The answer may be that you are just a lot better then them which gives the impression any merge works.

I couldn't name them all junky. I've matched up with some damn good pilots. To name a few Horble, Squat, Dobs? Once or twice, 38Maw, Lazer. I see your point in your post. However I still think it's a good distance. Wouldn't really bother me either way.

Maybe with a lighter? Which oddly enough is heavier than a match.

It works at 5K for sure, I just feel really restricted prior to merge

HiTech

Potential E--Altitude
Kinetic E--Airspeed

Diving does gain you energy...Kinetic E, but takes from your Potential E.  Unless you are a P-47 you won't get that alt back at the same speed you started:)

I don't at all. I have all the options I want. Maybe make it to where players can agree on settings in a certain mode?

Or maybe make it so the two players who want to fight can fight instead on just hoping you randomly get paired to 1v1... also an option to remove fights at 20k...

This would be nice being able to pick you opponent sometimes.

The score system is a great addition to the DA!
5k starting separation is by far plenty of room to do any type of initial merge at. I notice that I do more off angle merges than anyone I have ever dueled and have plenty of room to get my plane into position. The reason is that unlike before you now start at speed and alt and have the option of how to start the engagement.

I do like the randomness of the alt that you find yourself in once the fight starts. 10k field,20k field.ect. very nice change.

Yep settings for fights you want to participate in...low/mid/high alt and a highlight type feature where you only queue in against selected players, so say if it's more then 1 person you are in there with you can select all of them too.

Combining the mission system with the Match play seems to be an ideal path.

The ability to create a mission with specific aircraft and loadouts for each player slot would be an excellent complement to the random queue.

Give the mission creator control to boot unwanted players from the mission or to use a simple pass word for access and the ability to trigger the mission.

I love match play and see great potential if its capabilities are expanded a bit.

(maybe if we could analyze the recordings(.acmi) with i don't know maybe Tacview then we could look at all the finer details of dogfighting)

Chalk me up on the LOVE IT camp. It's a fantastic way for the dogfighting crowd to FINALLY get instant action in this game.

A long time coming, and a VERY welcome addition. Thank you HTC. I hope it stays populated.

Now, can we do something about the spelling of the word queue? Yeah, I'm one of those guys... :bolt:

Yep, and we already have god view for spectating/casting, it would just need some work to make it more friendly and easier to use, maybe some easy buttons to swap to player views.

I borrowed the neighbors from their cave while they were out hunting pterodactyl eggs.

I rolled my roundy round (trying to think of a better name, maybe tare, whar, or wheel) over there.

yep! A few more customization options for the rounds would be nice to set up specific team fights, etc., but Hitech is on the right path with this one.

I love that arena truly a learning experience and i have fought Spek , again truly  a learning experience but....  every single pilot in there has been helpful and respectful  even if you arent all that good, and if you ask they will give you pointers. I will say this put your ego away in there  because it will get bruised but some unlikely charcters sometimes but its fun  to watch the different ACMs and how everybody handles them a little differently in the situation.

<S> to all the fine pilots in there  thanks for the experience  .....  Spek  can I have that pound of flesh back now ?

I like the ides of being able to pick your opponent sometime also, the randomness is great but there are times youd like to fight a certain person maybe to teach/learn  or even grudge match  but still keep therandomness because its alot of fun.  Spikes I love it when you post Dont even care what you post  I just love that Icon.  eeeww the score thing  lol  thats bad Im always trying different things in there to try to figure them out so either i quit doingthat and try to get a better score or......  keep doing it and learn something.  see ya at the bottom of the pile.

I wouldn't worry about the score.... I only posted about it because I thought I might have found a discrepancy in the way it was ranking

As for wanting to work with a specific individual, just the two of you pick a dueling field and have at it.....you don't have to always jump in to the Match Play....

Hope this helps

LOL you had four bottles of scotch and You were still kicking my butt once you figured out trees are bad lmao had way too much fun with us TC  :salute

Nah, I didn't drink that much, I said I was down to about less than a a 1/4th of the 1/2 gallon of scotch I had opened right at or before we launched in FSO.... still way too much honestly in that short amount of time... first time I couldn't drink the pain away... I have some major spine issues and have torn my right rotator cuff twice, which makes it very painful for me to set and play for even 20 minutes....

That is why people don't see me playing all that much these days....it isn't that I don't want to, the pain is simply unbearable most of the time...

Hopefully my new specialist that l'm seeing tomorrow will have some good news for me and I'll find out when they will want to do the surgery on my C7 & T1 vertebra.... think they said I will have to go through 2 or 3 more surgeries once I get through this next one....

I'm still hurting from flying FSO and then some MA then the Match Play we did....

Still had a blast, regardless of the pain I put myself through

Now you see, this is what happens when you don't consult your friends.  We are easily able to perform this surgery on you, TC, at a much lower cost than you are going to have to pay these specialists you speak of.  Just let us know where it hurts, and what your favorite whiskey is, and when you'll have a few days off.

Now that I think on it, we need to wait for Molsman to recover.  He's usually the one we designate to sit on you during the procedure.
