This particular pilot (either Marine or Navy, but I believe Marine) was training at Pensacola (wwii era), was soloing over the gulf and made an emergency landing on a passing carrier.
Carrier was radio silence on the way to the Pacific. The pilot stayed with them, flew and fought with them.
When he (finally) returned to Pensacola, he flunked out of flight school.
Looking to corroborate this account & get more details.
Originally heard this from a naval instructor, but I am pretty sure he was there in the 50's, so that would be a second hand account to him.
TIA!!
