I noticed "Soda's Aircraft Evaluations" website has been retired.
Does anyone know anything about this?
If it involves donations to get it back up, I would like to help.
If reviving the site isn't a option; would anyone like to share any printed/saved the pages?
-
Thats a shame :(
While a bit old and out dated it had some great info on the planes it did cover.
Gonzo's comparison page is still available with just hard facts, no write ups. http://gonzoville.com/ahcharts/index.php
If anyone knows/can contact soda the information is still available to him. All he has to do is login and he can retrieve it, or give someone else the login info to get the info if he doesn't want to bother with it.

Gonzo's still needs up date with new planes added......and .50 cals. :bolt:

Isn't there an internet archived pages history service? Something like that where you can still find old pages?
-
The wayback machine, but I tried it and it is blocked.

This was one of my favorite go to sites my first few years learning the game. It will be missed if it is gone. :aok

Netaces.org was another valuable info site I was sorry to see go.

the actual pages are cached...you might want to scrape them soon if you want to save them. I don't know how long they've been cached or how long they stay.
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:u8NubCstFFwJ:members.shaw.ca/soda_p/F4U1D.htm+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:u8NubCstFFwJ:members.shaw.ca/soda_p/F4U1D.htm+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us)
the format for searching looks like "members.shaw.ca/soda_p/B24J.htm"
so you'd google search that format with the planes you want hoping to get a match and then choose cached.
unfortunately it doesn't seem to be cached at an index so someone could just go through the planes.
"members.shaw.ca/soda_p/models.htm"
good luck!
OR actually just call him and ask?
-
I will let Soda know that people are still looking at his pages.
-
I was running a K4 today and someone asked me the differences between the Bfs. Where do I start? :x

That would be nice of you, if you could and don't mind getting in touch with Soda, for the AH community, Pongo, Sir?
Soda had just started to update and revamp his entire website back during/right after the switch over to Aces High 2, if my memory is correct..... HTC had just added some new planes as well as adding some new models of some of the existing plane set....
BulletHead's write-ups were some good stuff to have/read, also.....

I have his manual. Can't figure out how to attach it here. Educate me, or send me an e-mail, and I'll mail it along.

Hitech and Skuzzy, is this something you could host on your servers?
-
I'll email Soda and ask if he can zip up his files and I'll find a place to host them.

You may be able to attach it in the screen shots forum. If not how big is the file?

3,010 KB. I'm certain that means something.
However, looks like the screen shots forum thing worked.

Attach it to Snailman/ Luche's Mega Thread for safe keeping

Any luck on getting Soda's aircraft evaluation pages back up?

I dont think anyone has been able to grab them yet. That would be the first step, then looking for a host. I hope pongo gets a hold of soda and can get the files.

What a shame if Sodas info was lost.
A weak spot of AH is... there aren't many noobs but A TON of vets.
The noobs get Vaporised learning in their 2 week trial n say FK it... little new blood.
Sodas site allowed players to understand the differences in aircraft immediately, helping immensely in a steep learning curve.
While, I may have someone's attention , why not extend the trial period?
-
I found the AH wiki pages do have information on aircraft as they should be flown in AH, with tips, etc. That helps.

Wow. I never thought my site would still be used after all this time. My service provider pulled the plug on the hosting part (some technology change they didn't port the content over ) and I hadn't maintained the site in probably 7 or 8 years. I suspect I still have all the original content but it'll require a bit of a search (old computer I'm not even using anymore but still have).
Let me see what I can find.

Awesome! Thanks Soda!

Your site helped me choose a trainer plane. Great breakdowns of all the planes.
-
I visited your site quite often looking up info on various planes Soda. Just want to say Thank You.

That sight was a tremendous help to a lot of us as well as being fun to read. I'd often go back just to read about the aircraft. It was a huge resource.
-
I also miss the great evaluation. It's available in the internet archive which is a great idea: https://web.archive.org/web/20161202085009/members.shaw.ca/soda_p/models.htm
I am printing some of my favorite's to PDF right now...

Was thinking about how great his reviews would be for new players. Made my life easier when I started out and am going to read these again and probably print them out.

The plane performance page is a good place to start. It's on the main page, under the Game Info tab.

Mosca or badboy had a good site where it listed all of the turn rates and sustained turn radii of Aces High planes. There was also a calculator program you could download too for testing turn rates iirc.

Gonzo had this one..... http://www.gonzoville.com/ahcharts/index.php

You can also get speed and climb charts on the clipboard when you're in the hanger.

After a few hours searching and preparing, I have a nice surprise: I have the complete set of the Soda aircraft evaluation ready in PDF's (1 pdf-file/type of plane). Plane-types after Soda made his write ups are not included, such as F4U-1A, Yak-3 and a few others.
If people interested they can give me a shout. I can send the file (zipped) by email. (provide your email address plz, ;) )
Another option is: if anyone can tell me if it is possible to attach a 6mb file in a BBS topic, I'll upload it.
A third option is that HTC gets the file on th BBS/downloads (Dale Addink, is that possible?).
And last: wouldn't it be nice to get a few people together, to fill in a "Soda-like" write-up for the missing plane sets. With some input from players we could manage to make the set complete again. I'm more then willing to do the editing needed to get it into the right content and tone.

If I’m not mistaken (I haven’t seen it mentioned yet) most of Soda’s articles are on the AH planes’ page (https://www.hitechcreations.com/21-flight-sim/world-war-two-planes/49-planes-of-aces-high). Look for the section dealing with such and such plane in AHII.
Best,
Marc

Gonzo has made the site available for hosting:
https://gonzoville.com/ahcharts/
Not sure how to make it work.

And just so all remember, all problems of the current year are problems of the past:

I downloaded it to my server and can get the first page to open. Once you click on the planes it fails due to "flash" issues. I'll sse if I can get it to work.

Fugitive,
So how can I save the Book of Dweebs in case it disappears?
I guess I can copy and paste, just seems inelegant. . .
