Title: Windows 10 S?
Post by: oboe on May 16, 2017, 04:04:52 PM
If what I just heard about a new version of Windows 10 is true, its very bad for consumers. For as many complaints as there are about Windows 10, it sounds to me like 10 S is going to rile people. How many more customers buttons can MS push?
- restricted to Bing search engine and Edge browser - restricted to installing software only through Windows store purchases (seriously?)
Does that mean Aces High will have to be made available through the Windows store (in which MS takes a $ cut)?

Windows 10 S is not for a desktop computer, from what I can gather. It is meant for mobile devices.

Windows 10 S may be pre-installed on new computers but Microsoft says there will always be the option to pay $50 and upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, which doesn't have the draconian limitations of S.

This should tell you everything.

The conference on W10S indicated that the upgrade path to Windows 10 Pro would be free. Otherwise, W10S will not allow any Win32 app to be installed, but nearly everything in the Windows Store will install.
This is just another step toward the final goal.

Not what their WEB site says (updated May 11, 2017): https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4020089/windows-10-s-faq

You can switch to Windows 10 Pro easily at any time through the Windows Store for an affordable price; payment is collected through the Windows Store.
To learn more or switch to Windows 10 Pro, go to the Windows Store, search for Windows 10 Pro.
Note
Switching to Pro is one-way. If you make the switch, you won't be able to go back to Windows 10 S.

Yeah, I saw that too. It indicates everything I said is true.
Supposedly W10S will be the most secure. There is simply no path for intrusion. There is supposed to never be bloat on a W10S system. Should you chose to "change out" to W10Pro, then you skirt the security.
It's just a means of competing with the Apple Store, Google Store, and ultimately Amazon.
Microsoft has been notably terrible at this in the past. There is no reason to think otherwise now.

It would be a good idea to watch this weeks "Security Now" with Steve Gibson. He very clearly explains what is going on with Windows 10 S.
