What an amazing spectacle.
Opening day officially was supposed to be the day before (last Friday) but there was too much wind, so they delayed it a day.

I know many will say "This isn't real sailing" etc. but next week the J Class Boats arrive for their regatta followed by a Tall Ship Regatta. You just cannot get more "Real sailing" than that.
The foiling boats are fast and sleek though, amazing to watch.
-
I prefer the traditional boats but todays AC is sailing, no doubt.
WTH are those guys pedaling? Is that for winches?
-
hydraulic, they build pressure to run the foils in and out as well as the sails and steering
-
I'm totally in to it!
The sailing is more competitive than ever.

Go kiwis

Speaking of them:

This was the Swedes and French heading on to the course:

Oracle Team USA went right past us too but my phone had switched to selfy mode and I couldn't see where the button was to get it back. Really annoying.
The wife and I watched it from this:) :

Some cool on board and helicopter stuff from yesterday.
Kiwis now leading! They had the first race in which one of the boats was on the foils for 100% of the race. Start to finish. Amazing.

High quality videos, awesome turquoise clear waters, brings memories, been there last time in April "97, onboard of Royal Princess, dang i'm getting old: I hope to take a vacation one day but im afraid of man eater alien creatures lurking deep in Bermuda Triangle abyss. :bolt:

Day 8 wrap up:

Oracle wins series and now sits it out until the finals, France out. Love the "merci Bermuda" on the wing.
Kiwis choose BAR...be good to get rid of BAR early...they want the Cup back in Portsmouth. Can't have that. I am a big Oracle fan because Ellison said he'd keep the Cup here next time. :aok

Kiwis make a mistake on a blustery stormy day.
-
Normally not my thing, but holy crap you cannot look away from those boats when they're on their foils at top speed. It's really racing on the edge.

Kiwis vs Sweden to see who gets to race Oracle Team USA for the Cup.

NZ goes up 2-1 after the Artemis Team Sweden skipper went overboard. Typical Kiwis (they are all Kiwis pretty much...lol...like Hockey players and Canada). "Where have you been?", when he makes it back to the boat. Surprised there wasn't an f-bomb in there too. lol

So this is happening soon.

Our little guesthouse is hosting the crew (and their chef) for the next two weeks of Hanuman.

I met a couple of the organizers and they invited us for a *ride* in their chase boat. They did warn us though....out at 5am, not back until 2pm under ANY circumstances. No way my wife could handle that and I turned down the offer too. I have watched the chase boats get chucked about in the Great Sound. These guys will be practicing and racing offshore. I predict a vomitorium. No thanks. They also off handily offered a ride on the yacht. I have asked my wife to check and see if they were serious because I can go on Tuesday. I don't care if I am seasick all day, it is an opportunity I can't past up. What a ride that would be. Trying not to get hopes up too much waiting for a response.

Apparently the owners arrived last night and thus my opportunity disappeared. I could have gone on the weekend but frankly the weather was horrible and it would not have been a fun time. They are going to organize a tour of the boat tomorrow though which will be cool.
I was told "Next time". Fingers crossed there IS a next time.

In the Red Bull Youth America's Cup, lowly Bermuda sits in 3rd place in their group. In about 20 minutes day 2 starts. I don't think any work is getting done here now.

Ive been off Bermuda fishing when the seas were less than good. No fun at all. To this day im sure it took a few years off my life.
Love the post Curval!! Keep it coming

I have been going CRAZY trying to find the Youth AC races. Two are done. Bermuda is in second place going into the last round of the qualifiers, behind Team New Zealand. If they qualify this place is going to explode.
-
I read the results wrong above and found out we came 4th overall in the qualifiers. I then was wrong again when I assumed we had not qualified, but we have!! Top 4 advance! We beat the Oracle trained US team...lol Although our team was also trained by Oracle. :)
Really proud of this little island today.

Sadly I won't be here to watch the finals, as my son is graduating. I will be there in spirit though.

Ditto.
No way I'd want to be out there.

Thumbs down. I didnt even see one bikini.

I was on The Carolina Princess out of Moorhead City NC once many years ago and I couldn't believe the Capt. took this boat out in that weather. Those waves had to be 10'+. THEN we go two hours to the reefs and he has to turn around cause a tornado was spotted so it was another two hours in.
I dont get sea sick but I get scared and I was scared. The rest of the boat was both.

I would like to learn how to sail... even if just a
small boat... but then I would love to return to
Scuba diving but the neurologist says NO!
:furious

Oracle are being schooled by NZ. A buddy of ours who is Oracle's physio and nutritionist for Oracle sent a friend a text saying "we will be fine" but I am not sure where his confidence is coming from. The Kiwis look so smooth around the course and Oracle just dont. They have the option of splashing a new boat this weekend (the degender only gets this ability) so maybe they added some more cycling grinders. But even if they do the grinders they have are not Olympic cyclists. New Zealand have them.
-
Went and fueled up our boat last evening after getting back from Canada. We will be out on the water tomorrow watching the races. The marina is FULL of all sorts of large expensive craft and the traffic to get in and out REALLY heavy. Quite a test of nerves getting in and out I assure you.
-
So we took our boat out to the races today. For the frigging LIFE of me I could not get our anchor to catch and hold. So, we just trolled up and down the outside of the course and cooked our burgers etc. on the move. I got fed up with other boats zooming in and stealing our spots too, must have moved 20 times because of that crap.
Anyway, we still had a great time and at least Oracle finally showed up. About time.
After the races we dropped anchor in an area called Paradise Lakes had some drinks and a swim and then headed back in. Very pleased with my docking, I am getting better at it every time.

NZ can win the Cup today.
-
Yep. 6-1 now, they only need to win one.
Oracle have been completely outclassed by better sailing thus far.
I was just down at my boat washing her down and a guy with a Kiwis accent and an Emirates Team NZ shirt on came flying up to me and offered me pretty much whatever I wanted if I could get him and his friends up to Dockyard. I told him not to worry about it and was unhooking shore power when he got a call saying the friends had found someone going up there. In a thick Kiwis accent he said "You mate are a LEGEND." lol. Kind of cool. Glad I didn't have to go.
Race 8 coming up in like 5 minutes. Bye bye Oracle.
-
Well that was quick.
Congratulations Team New Zealand!!!
A distinct butt kicking.
-
Yup congrats NZ.
-
Muahahahaha the glory is not just winning the cup but also rubbing that smug aussies nose in it.
